 External Reviews
external linkRon Howard's The Missing is an intense and character-driven Western that evenly blends mystery, action, suspense and the supernatural to buck the clichés normally associated with that genre. 3/4

external linkRon Howard's latest Oscar bid is a gruesome and thoroughly unpleasant western that can't decide whether it's racist or overly p.c. Guess what? It's both.
--Charles Taylor (Salon)

external linkAt 135 minutes, "The Missing" is way too long. This is basically a B Western jumped up out of its category. As a lean little oater, this story could have held down half of a double bill back when Westerns were popular, but these days audiences need a reason to see a Western. 2/4
--Roger Ebert (Chicago Sun-Times)

external linkThough far from his best work, Ron Howard’s “The Missing” is a daring step forward for a filmmaker so used to big audience-pleasing movies and warm performances. This tale of witchcraft and kidnapping isn’t an easy sit, but it rewards with narrative integrity and glorious New Mexican photography. B
--Brian Orndorf (FilmJerk.com)

external linkRich, tense and exciting, The Missing works as both a gripping thriller and lovingly-made western. 4/5
--Nev Pierce (BBC Films)

external linkRon Howard has constructed a film that – while dark and absent of sentimentality – works both as a gripping Western and a perceptive observation of troubled relationships. 78/100
--Brian Webster (Apollo Guide)

external linkWell-acted and impressively directed, The Missing is an intense, dark, violent Western with a streak of cruelty that belies its ‘15’ certificate. 4/5
--Matthew Turner (ViewLondon)

external linkHoward has long wanted to do a western and, with "The Missing," the often sentimental director deviates from his warm and fuzzy style to construct a good, though not great, contribution to the genre. 3/4
--Megan Lehmann (New York Post)

external linkThis isn't in much danger of becoming a classic addition to the genre, but it's good to see competent westerns still getting made and if guns, horses and moseying-on-down are your thing, this is well worth a look. 7/10
--Gary Panton (Movie Gazette)

external linkPowerful and provocative, "The Missing" is another masterful production from one of the industry's best directors and two of its best actors.
--Paul Clinton (CNN Showbiz)
