Hostel Reviews

external linkI LOVED IT! Yes the flick did take its sweet ass time to get to the “fat of the bitch” and I had to pause my brain to swallow at least one plot turn but all in all Hostel proved to me that “out of line horror” still exists and that Eli Roth is here to stay! I got to see the uncut version and I pray that they won’t trim it down too much to get that R. The violence is one of the film’s main strength... [read review] 3.5/4

external linkThere is a group of horror fans - those who embrace cheesiness and revel in gore - who will appreciate what Roth delivers in Hostel. I'm not one of those. I prefer my horror to be served on a knife's edge. I don't mind the blood and viscera if there are genuine shocks and a high level of suspense. Those qualities are absent here. Even the big revelation of what the hostel is hiding is an anti-climax, and the lack of a single villain dilutes the film's potency... [read review] 2/4

external linkReviewers are calling ”Hostel” scary, but I don’t remember when ”scary” became synonymous with gruesome, repugnant and vaguely homophobic. The film is a throwback to the 1970s ’cks - keep an eye out for the ”eye-gasm” scene - and the film grows increasingly phony. [read review] 3/4

external linkThere was a time when what were called snuff movies were traded under the counter, with at least a smidgen of embarrassment in the transaction. Now they’re mass-produced and hustled into thousand multiplexes to satisfy the expectations of youngsters brought up on the most ultra-violent of video games. Basically this is a movie that traffics in sadism as much as its villains do, and your reaction to it will pretty much depend on how you feel about that. [read review] C
external linkRoth counts Quentin Tarantino among his mentors (and fans), and it would be unfair to dismiss "Hostel" as nothing but a competent delivery system for slash-and-smash yuks. Like Tarantino, Roth composes shots stylishly, amps up the shrieking musical scorewhen the action goes over-the-top, and lets humor emerge from the extremeness of the onscreen scenarios. Even if this type of entertainment doesn't entertain you, ya gotta admit, it's pretty slickly done. [read review] 4/5

external linkI kept asking myself "what the hell is going on?" and "why do I care?" But once you find yourself cringing (in a good way) through the second half, you understand that a lot of the early segments in the film where set-ups for extremely juicy pay-offs. [read review] 3.5/5

external link...will hold your attention from the opening credits to the final bloody moments, and will not let up. It's a creepy film that revels in it's excessive everything and delivers the kind of hard movie Horror fans have been waiting for. [read review] 4.5/5

external linkIt’s a shame that Hostel isn’t scary — in the least — because if the gore relieved tension instead of replacing it, without a doubt, Roth would have had one hell of a horror flick. [read review] 2.5/5
--Blake French (FilmCritic.com)
external linkA no-name cast gives it a good go, and if you like disgusting-yet-original, this qualifies. But it lacks the creepy, edgy, laugh-out-loud humor of Roth's first film, "Cabin Fever." [read review] 2/4
