Plot: Get ready for the ultimate showdown!Freddy Krueger (Robert Englund) is in hell – literally. It’s been nearly ten years since Krueger, one of the scariest horror movie characters of all time (from A The Nightmare on Elm Street series), invaded peoples’ dreams to exact his deadly form of revenge and murder. But now, his memory has been systematically erased by a town determined to put an end to Freddy once and for all. Potential victims have been drugged to prevent them from dreaming, rendering impotent the master of nightmares They’ve eliminated their fear of Freddy, absolute torture for an egomaniac psychopath who’s a legend in his own mind. Like an inmate with a life sentence, Freddy’s been reduced to plotting a fantastic revenge that will never happen. Until, that is, Freddy resurrects Jason Voorhees (Ken Kirzinger), the equally iconic madman from the Friday the 13th film series. Jason is the perfect means for Freddy to once again instill fear on Elm Street, creating a window of opportunity for him to emerge from his purgatory. This movie expends so much energy setting up the back-story that it will leave those in attendance bored because the battle promised in the title doesn't start for more than an hour.--Elvis Mitchell (The New York Times)
Freddy Vs. Jason has all the requisite elements of a slasher film: topless, big breasted women; cheap scares; and a seemingly-endless supply of blood and viscera. --James Berardinelli (ReelViews)
Entertaining, extremely gory horror flick that should please fans of both franchises. --Matthew Turner (ViewLondon)
This weekend's hack-n-slash is the perfect antidote to all the films this summer that tried to be fun, but weren't. --Daniel Davis (MovieWeb)
While the usual suspects assemble to await their deaths, we're left waiting for more of what we came for in the first place: Freddy, Jason and some supernatural ass-kicking. --Christopher Monfette (MovieWeb)
The result is a dumb, but occasionally fun, attempt to squeeze some fresh blood out of two of horror's longest-running franchises --Jamie Russell (BBC Films)
When “Freddy vs. Jason” is on - and it certainly is during this climactic showdown - it’s a real sick kick, and one of the most entertaining films of the summer. And everything else is worth sitting through to get to the best bits. What should matter to fans is that “Freddy vs. Jason” is far more fun than the other supposed sendoffs in the respective franchises. --Jamey Hughton (MovieViews)
Indeed, the most disturbing thing in the film is a photograph hanging over the police sergeant's desk. But even if you laugh and throw your popcorn at "Freddy vs. Jason," you still secretly want to grab your seat and scream. This film and others like it still nurture that hope.--Jeffrey M. Anderson (San Francisco Examiner)
Sometimes it irritates me when critics are harsh on movies not meant to be anything else other than fun, but here I find myself sitting in the critic’s chair, calling Freddy one of the ultimate worst things Hollywood has ever produced. D--Lee Tistaert (Lee's Movie Info)
"Freddy vs. Jason" does put an appropriate button on these two franchises, which were born out of the ashes of the sexual revolution, when the old Puritanism that demanded punishment for pleasure seekers had itself become demonized. --Jack Mathews (New York Daily News)
With the exception of 'Jason X' and 'New Nightmare', this is probably the best sequel in either franchise. Very gory, very knowing, and very funny. 7/10--Anton Bitel (Movie Gazette)
Like the later chapters in both of these seemingly endless movie series, it all seems just a bit too familiar and a bit too obvious as to what’s coming next. 61/100--Brian Webster (Apollo Guide)
The plot is plain, but the chemistry is to die for --Wesley Morris (Boston Globe)
The arrival of the long-threatened Krueger-Voorhees face-off amounts to silly overkill.--Michael Rechtshaffen (Hollywod Reporter)
In the end, I guess I just expected more from this film after such a long gestation period (it's been talked about for over 12 years). I also expected more humor, more fun, more action and ultimately, more scares and terror between the two big guys. 5/10--'JoBlo' (JoBlo.com)

This movie should never have been made. What a sad, sad way to treat a pair of screen icons. Likely, this will go down in horror history like the Dino De Laurentiis cash-in remake of King Kong and the Devlin/Emmerich Godzilla. 2/10-- (CHUD.com)
And for big, long, pregnant moments of Freddy vs. Jason I was helplessly and hopelessly bored. The bulk of the problem lies in the Icon meets Icon conceit; the screenwriters are saddled with the unenviable task of combining two horror legends into one cohesive new film.-- (eFilmCritic.com)
Considering what the filmmakers had to work with, and the fact that it has all been done before, "Freddy Vs. Jason" isn't bad. And sometimes not bad is almost good.--Mick LaSalle (San Francisco Chronicle)
Like the later chapters in both of these seemingly endless movie series, it all seems just a bit too familiar and a bit too obvious as to what’s coming next. 61/100--Brian Webster (Apollo Guide)
Of course the movie isn't perfect, of course sometimes it's just silly and dumb. The teens are just dumb dumb dumb, but it's dark, bloody, comfortable and most importantly, Freddy and Jason go at it like they should. This is the Freddy Vs. Jason I've always wanted to see. There are moments of just pure fan ecstacy and when all is said and done, the movie is a blast. I couldn't be happier.--Sonny Fernandez (Diabolical-Dominion.com)
