|Genre: Drama, World War I, True Story, Tragedy, Biography|
Plot: A film biography of the Welsh poet Ellis Evans, who wrote under the pseudonym Hedd Wyn. Set in the days of World War I, the drama focuses on Evans's moral plight: as his countrymen willingly head off to battle, Ellis -- whose work has just begun to earn him fame -- must decide whether he too should join the fighting. When he does choose to claim conscientious objector status, Evan's stand costs him his girlfriend, who accuses him of cowardice.
It turns out, however, that escaping the bloodshed becomes impossible when a recruiter demands that at least one man from Ellis's family must become a soldier.
In an ending rich with irony, "Hedd Wyn" pinpoints the high cost of World War I -- and all wars -- in lives and talent.
