Tagline: This time staying awake won't save you...
Plot: Freddy's back, only this time he's not confined to dreams in this macabre film within a film. Heather Langenkamp, star of the original NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET, along with other actors and director Craven all appear as themselves. When Heather's husband is mysteriously killed her son begins to have disturbing nightmares, culminating in a bizarre encounter with the fictional boogeyman. As self-referential as Craven's SCREAM movies, but much more serious and creepy. Some scenes shot on location near the aftermath of the 1994 Northridge earthquake.

a film that brought the Freddy mythos to a new level of reality and set the stage for his biggest success to date, Scream.--Cortney Fusco (Diabolical-Dominion.com)
A good break-away from the rest of the "Nightmare" series. Good as a bookend of to the series and also as a stand alone film. Check it out. 7/10-- (UHM)
Highly unimpressive sequel is a real letdown for fans. It's got an innovative idea, but it has no guts. -- (TheVideoGraveYard.com)
However, even if New Nightmare gets tired of its own postmodern premise by its end, it does scores some strong points for exploring some of childhood's most normal, yet irrational, fears. 51/100--Jack Witzig (ColdSpot)
Amazing, over-the-top climax to the entire Nightmare on Elm Street series... It's a daring thinking man's horror movie. For Craven, it set the stage for him to direct the landmark post-modern fear flick "Scream," another social commentary horror pic.-- (eSplatter.com)

...what the movie offers until that time, is a well-written drama with enough horror elements in it, to keep the horror audience interested. -- (Bloody-Disgusting.com)
