Plot: Jay Craven's THE YEAR THAT TREMBLED is a dramatic coming-of-age film set against the turbulent era of civil unrest in early 1970s America. On May 4, 1970, a group of teenaged friends find their lives forever changed when four college students are shot and killed by the Ohio National Guard during an antiwar protest at Kent State University. Fresh out of high school and fearing the draft, introspective Casey Pedersen (Jonathan Brandis) and his friends (Charlie Finn, Sean Nelson, and Lucas Ford) find themselves caught up in the sociopolitical upheaval when they shelter a young activist involved with the protest. Meanwhile, their next-door neighbor and former high school teacher Helen Gardner (Marin Hinkle) also struggles with war-related complications--she has been fired from her job because of her antiwar activities, and her lawyer husband is launching a civil suit on behalf of the Kent State victims. Weaving actual footage from the period throughout the dramatic action, THE YEAR THAT TREMBLED examines the effects of real-world politics on the lives of individuals.
