Plot: A lavish period drama about Napoleon's romance with the Polish countess Marie Walewska. When the French general takes a fancy to Marie, her husband and countrymen urge her to take him as her lover. Their reason is practical: Poland needs Napoleon's support in keeping Russia at bay. The patriotic countess complies, entering into a passionate and enduring affair that ends up transcending political ambition and surviving the vagaries of history.
