Trivia from Dead of Night (1945)
1
Four of Ealing studios' directors worked on DEAD OF NIGHT. Initially, it was planned as even more of a communal effort--Charles Frend, who made 13 films for Ealing, was unable to participate as originally planned. Basil Dearden directed the framing sequence (based on a story provided by E.F. Benson) and the Hearse Driver sequence (also based on a story by E.F. Benson); Alberto Cavalcanti directed the Christmas Party sequence (based a story by Angus Macphail) and the Ventriloquist's Dummy sequence (based on a story by John Baines); Charles Crichton directed the Golfing Story (based on a story by H. G. Wells); and Robert Hamer directed the Haunted Mirror sequence (which was based on another story by John Baines).
