Plot: When Catholic priest Adolf Daens moves to the industrial city of Aalst, he is saddened to find the working conditions less than poor when he discovers women working for less pay and children working the night shift. To change the gloomy situation, he and his bother, Pieter, an editor at a Catholic newspaper, decide to start their own political party, the Christian People's Party. However, it won't be long until the conservatives, including the church itself, will do anything to stop the Daens' from dismantling the established social hierarchy.
