To capture background footage, director Victor Fleming sailed a double-masted schooner from Gloucester to Newfoundland and across the Panama Canal to Long Beach, California. The main action of the film, however, was shot along the California coast, requiring tanks of live cod to be shipped down from Washington.

The film inspired a pair of technical innovations. Spray-proof lenses were created special for the film, along with a unique camera housing that kept the camera stable on the choppy seas.

The main character, Harvey, is a 19-year-old boy in Rudyard Kipling's original novel. In the movie, he's changed to a 12-year-old.
