Dame JUDI DENCH most recently received a Screen Actors Guild Award and an Academy Award nomination for Best Actress in a Supporting Role for her work in Lasse Hallstrom's Chocolat. In 1998, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, BAFTA and the National Society of Film Critics recognized her performance as Queen Elizabeth in John Madden's Shakespeare in Love. In her previous collaboration with Madden, Dench starred as Queen Victoria in Mrs. Brown, winning an Academy Award nomination for Best Actress and a cluster of honors, including Golden Globe and BAFTA awards.

Dench's forthcoming motion picture roles include Lady Bracknell in The Importance of Being Earnest and the title character in Iris, directed by Richard Eyre.

Other film credits include: the Academy Award winning documentary Into the Arms of Strangers: Stories of the Kindertransport (narrator), the recent Bond films The World Is Not Enough, Tomorrow Never Dies and Golden Eye as well as Franco Zefferelli's Tea with Mussolini, Kenneth Branagh's Hamlet and Henry V, Tim Sullivan's Jack and Sarah, Charles Sturridge's A Handful of Dust, David Jones's 84 Charing Cross Road and James Ivory's A Room With a View.

Dench's career in the theatre spans more than 40 years. She is currently on stage in "The Royal Family" at the Theatre Royal, Haymarket. She recently appeared on Broadway and at the Royal National Theatre in Richard Eyre's production of "Amy's View," for which she won Tony and Critics Circle awards for Best Actress. Other recent credits include Sir Peter Hall's "Filumena," for which Dench was nominated for an Olivier Award, "A Little Night Music," for which she received the Olivier for Best Actress in a Musical, Anthony Page's "Absolute Hell," (Olivier) and John Caird's "The Seagull."

She has played most of the great Shakespearean roles — Juliet, Beatrice, Lady Macbeth, Isabella, Tatania, Viola, Portia and Cleopatra — and a wide variety of classical and contemporary title characters in "The Duchess of Malfi," "St. Joan" and "Mother Courage." Her theatrical credits also include Irma in "The Three Sisters," Juno in "Juno and the Paycock" and Lady Bracknell in "The Importance of Being Ernest." Dench also created the role of Sally Bowles in the original London production of "Cabaret."

Her numerous television credits include the BBC's hugely popular comedy series "As Time Goes By." Recently, Dench starred with Olympia Dukakis and Sir Ian Holm in HBO's "The Last of the Blonde Bombshells."

Dench was named Dame of the British Empire in 1988.
