Although the film was Iran's official entry for the Best Foreign Film Oscar, Iranian officials attempted to withdraw the movie from competition to protest U.S. Congress's continued funding of anti-government activity in Iran. However, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences refused to withdraw the movie from competition. Despite the controversy, the movie ultimately failed to get an Oscar nomination.

According to director Jafar Panahi the 500-toman bill that little Razieh attempts to buy the goldfish with was worth about a dollar and a half in the U.S. at the time the film was released. In Iran, he said, that amount could get you a ride from the airport to your hotel, and represented one-third of a day's earnings for the type of family depicted in the movie.

The film shared the top prize at the Tokyo Film Festival. Panahi received a $150,000 award.
