Gene Hackman in Heist (2001) GENE HACKMAN (Joe Moore) made his film debut in Lilith, with Warren Beatty. Beatty and Hackman's second movie together, 1967's Bonnie and Clyde, earned Hackman an Academy Award nomination and a place on film schools' curriculums for good.I Never Sang For My Father. However, it was his landmark performance as Popeye Doyle in The French Connection, in 1971, that earned him his first Oscar.The Poseidon Adventure, Coppola's The Conversation, Mel Brook's Young Frankenstein, Reds, Under Fire. Hoosiers. No Way Out, and three performances as villain Lex Luthor in Superman, Superman II, and Superman IV are but a few.
