Gene Hackman in Heist (2001) GENE HACKMAN (Joe Moore) made his film debut in Lilith, with Warren Beatty. Beatty and Hackman's second movie together, 1967's Bonnie and Clyde, earned Hackman an Academy Award nomination and a place on film schools' curriculums for good. The second of Hackman's Academy Award nominations came within the next few years, for I Never Sang For My Father. However, it was his landmark performance as Popeye Doyle in The French Connection, in 1971, that earned him his first Oscar. Hackman followed that with a string of box-office smashes, both critical and popular hits. The Poseidon Adventure, Coppola's The Conversation, Mel Brook's Young Frankenstein, Reds, Under Fire. Hoosiers. No Way Out, and three performances as villain Lex Luthor in Superman, Superman II, and Superman IV are but a few. His performance in Mississippi Burning earned him another Oscar nomination as Best Actor. Hackman's second Oscar, for Unforgiven, cemented his reputation with a second generation of movie-goers. His decades of work read like a textbook on the recent history of American film. By way of example, a partial list from his most recent past: The Replacements, Twilight with Susan Sarandon and Paul Newman, The Birdcage, Extreme Measures, Absolute Power, again with Clint Eastwood, The Quick and the Dead, The Firm, Crimson Tide, and Get Shorty with John Travoha and Hackman's Heist co-stars Danny DeVito and Deiroy Lindo. His upcoming films include Behind Enemy Lines and The Royal Tenenbaums. Hackman recently added the role of author to his repertoire, co-writing with marine archaeologist Dan Lenihan the critically acclaimed, best-selling novel Wake of the Perdido Star.
