Superman Returns Reviews

external linkI so wanted to totally fall in love with SUPERMAN RETURNS and wound up coming out of the theatres “liking it a lot” instead. I can see the new generation of Superman fans lapping this one up like a pussy in front of a milk bowl but for a dude that grew up on the ALL AROUND SOLID (minus the "can you read my mind" voice over) original; I found this “quasi tribute” to it lacking in places, mostly on a script level (Luthor's plan blew dongs!)... [read review] 3/4

external link...is not a remake, but a film that takes place between films, and it works. Singer knows how to convey the same lore and wonder Superman has always had and he’s summed it up in one fantastic scene where Superman walks against a tide of bullets. It’s classic Superman, and Singer has it. “Superman Returns” is one of the best depictions to date. [read review] 3.5/5

external linkSinger has struck gold here, crossing dangerous terrain to bring Superman back to life, and his efforts to remain true to the heart and to the rippling red cape have provided the overwhelming, goose bump-inducing exhilaration of watching one of the greatest films of 2006. external linkAs it stands, Superman Returns is certainly a good film worth seeing but it doesn’t compare to the original (and make no mistake, Returns IS a sequel). That said, it’s entertaining with a promising start for the rejuvenation of a franchise out of the public’s mind. [read review] 4/5
--Brian Oliver (MovieMansGuide.com)
external link...leaves open plenty of room for another installment. The last few scenes suggests plenty without certifying anything. It makes for a frustrating last scene as you want the characters to say more than they do but as the old stage adage goes, "Always leave the audience wanting more." As far as Bryan Singer/Brandon Routh's Superman goes, I want more! [read review] 4/4

external linkOverall, I liked this movie. I didn’t fall in love with it, I’m not likely to go out of my way to see it again in the next year or so, but while I was sitting there with a bucket of nachos on my lap and some root beer on the side, I had a good time reliving some of the nostalgic feelings that I had upon experiencing the original SUPERMAN on the big screen back in the day, even moreso because a lot of items in this movie were similar to those in the original... --'JoBlo' (JoBlo.com)
external link"Superman Returns" makes the common mistake of dragging out its denouement, but both the film and its star maintain continuity with the earlier films while having their own unique qualities. "Superman Returns" has an emotional depth that the earlier films did not. I look forward to a sequel. [read review] B+,B+
external linkI think it's important to make aware the type of movie "Superman Returns" is. "Superman Returns" is unlike any superhero movie you've ever seen. There is action, there is suspense, there is drama, there is love, and there's also a lot of heart and compassion. This will throw many people for a loop. It's wrong to bring preconceived notions of what this movie should be, and also wrong to compare "Superman Returns" to any other comic book movies... [read review] 9/10
--Thomas R. Tinneny (ComingSoon.net)
external link...respects all that has come before, and not just with the art direction that hearkens to the 40s, while remaining in the present, the barely glimpsed face of Superman’s father really is Marlon Brando, or the presence of Neill and Jack Larson (television’s Jimmy Olson). It remains true to its comic book roots, being an adventure, of action and of the heart, that never forgets its sense of fun, and more importantly, its exhilarating sense of wonder. [read review] 5/5
--Andrea Chase (Killer Movie Reviews)
external link...clocks in at a fat 157 minutes, but I hardly noticed the passage of time. The movie had me enthralled from opening to closing. One could easily argue that Singer used his time in the X-Men universe as an opportunity to hone his superhero movie skills.Superman Returns is near the top - if not at the top - of the superhero movie pile. It offers nearly everything: romance, action, humor, and plenty of goose bumps. For Superman, many happy returns. [read review] 3.5/4
--James Berardinelli (ReelViews)
external linkAt the end of the day, Superman Returns is an enjoyable superhero film. I’m not sure it will be so fondly remembered as Donner’s classic, but Singer handles the iconic character wonderfully and his return to the big screen is welcomed. [read review] 3/4
--Michael Sheridan (Tailslate.net)
external link...Good but not great, Superman Returns is absolutely gorgeous on the surface. There’s no way to fault the effects, and you really will believe a man can fly after watching Routh as Superman soar through the sky. [read review] B

external link...After bringing its audience back to base after a long time away, Superman may be ready once again to dazzle us with a whole new adventure, hopefully with more urgent conflict and drama the next time. [read review] 7/10
--Jeffrey Chen (WindowToMovies.com)
external linkI wanted to like “Superman Returns,” but Singer and company are so concerned about doing justice to Superman’s past, they fail to generate much interest in what, if any, future the franchise might have. [read review] 2.5/5
--Pete Vonder Haar (FilmThreat.com)
external link...Like I said, I'll always remember the night... Yeah, my car got wrecked. But I'll always remember it as the night I patiently waited for since 1980 -- the night that Superman returned. [read review] 9/10
--Liam Cullin (EmpireMovies.com)
external linkEnjoyable, intelligent and genuinely moving blockbuster with superb effects, a strong script and a terrific central performance by newcomer Brandon Routh. [read review] 4/5
--Matthew Turner (ViewLondon)
external linkA heartfelt Superman movie that plays to a broad audience thanks to an emotionally troubled Man of Steel. [read review]
--Kirk Honeycutt (Hollywod Reporter)
external linkSuperman Returns soars. Film of the year so far. And not just because of Brandon Routh… [read review] 9/10
