Richard Harris in Count of Monte Cristo, The (2002)

RICHARD HARRIS was born to play the part of the Abbe Faria, Edmond Dantes’s philosophical prison companion in "The Count of Monte Cristo."

The veteran actor has had a long and varied career, first making his mark as Frank Machin, the tortured rugby league player in Lindsay Anderson’s "This Sporting Life." That performance earned Harris his first Academy Award® nomination as Best Actor in 1964 and the Best Actor award at the 1964 Cannes Film Festival. Since then his film credits are legion, from "Shake Hands With the Devil" (with James Cagney) to such movies as "Major Dundee," "The Molly Maguires," "A Man Called Horse," "The Wild Geese," "Patriot Games," "Unforgiven," "Trojan Eddie," "Cry The Beloved Country," "To Walk With Lions," and "Gladiator." Harris has played Cain in "The Bible," King Arthur in "Camelot" (a role for which he won a Golden Globe and also played on stage and television), the title role in "Cromwell," King Richard in "Robin and Marian" and Gulliver in "Gulliver’s Travels."

He was co-executive producer on both "Echoes Of A Summer" and "Return Of A Man Called Horse" and made his directorial debut with "Bloomfield" (nominated for a Golden Globe as Best Foreign Film). His second Oscar® nomination was for his role as Bull McCabe in Jim Sheridan’s "The Field" and one of his favorite roles is the quietly arresting part of Frank (playing opposite Robert Duvall) in "Wrestling Ernest Hemingway." Last fall, Harris appeared as Albus Dumbledore, Headmaster of Hogwarts, in "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone." He will reprise the role next fall in "Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets." Most recently, he has worked on John Steinbeck’s "The Pearl."

Harris’s television credits include "The Hunchback of Notre Dame," "The Great Kandinsky," and "Maigret, The Return."

He recorded a number-one hit with the song "MacArthur Park" (nominated for four Grammys) and won a Grammy in the category of Spoken Arts for "Jonathan Livingston Seagull." He has written a poetry compilation, In the Membership of My Days while his second book of poetry, a book of short stories and his autobiography (People I Did, People I Didn’t) will soon be published.
