Plot: The hairy adventures begin as unbeatable Deputy D.A. Dave Douglas (ALLEN) takes on his latest legal case—this time involving a criminal animal laboratory. It’s yet another ambitious assignment that will whisk workaholic Dave away from his wife (KRISTIN DAVIS) and kids (ZENA GREY and SPENCER BRESLIN), who yearn for his attention. But when Dave is accidentally infected with a top-secret genetic-mutation serum that morphs his body into that of the family’s new pet Bearded Collie, everything he thought he knew about being himself and a part of his family changes. Now, with his perked-up ears, and his front-row seat on the household carpet, Dave is able to gain an entirely different perspective into his family’s secrets and dreams. Inspired by what he discovers, Dave wants nothing more than to stop fetching and return to fathering—only first he’ll have to stop the evil genius (ROBERT DOWNEY JR.) behind the serum…in a literally wild chase that will finally give him a chance to become man’s—and his family’s—best

external linkThe only one who profits from the experience is Robert Downey Jr., playing an evil scientist. When he’s onscreen, the Shaggy Dog feels different — more mischievous, more exciting, more fun. In a perfect world, he should have been the lead, not a former sitcom star who has trouble maneuvering outside gentle chauvinism... 2/5

external linkDespite saccharine speeches about family togetherness, the movie earns its laughs, spoofing animal lovers even as it dishes out cute animal tricks. This is a classic family fun fare, likely destined for sequelhood. 2.5/4
--Susan Walker

external link...It goes without saying that “The Shaggy Dog” doesn’t have the charm of the Tommy Kirk original or the Dean Jones sequel. This “Shaggy Dog” merely slops on computer trickery and heartwarming message 101 plotting in the absence of creative screenwritingand inspired direction. 2/5
--Brian Orndorf (eFilmCritic.com)

external link...is quintessential Disney cannibalization, with no wit or energy to justify its existence. The sight of a grown man behaving like a dog is funny for a minute; unfortunately, the film lasts 98. And one of those minutes features the song "Who Let the Dogs Out?" -- a hip, savvy cultural reference indeed, assuming this is still October 2000. D

external linkIt's silly. It's slapstick. It's even, in the view of the 8-year-old in the next seat, ''kinda stupid." But sometimes -- a chilly Saturday in March, say, with kids to amuse and when a stir-crazy parent needs a little amusement herself -- silly, slapstick, and kinda stupid is just what you need. 3/4

external linkWho will want to see this? Probably no one who has read this much. Have you run full speed into a wall lately? Do you occasionally lose bowel control? This is for you! F

external linkThe best thing of the film it was very funny I could not stop laughing. This is a good film you can take the whole family to check it out today. 4/5
