“By the end of the movie both Viola and Charlie have grown,” says Lopez. “Charlie no longer needs Viola’s approval, and Viola learns to let go and not control and manipulate everything in her life. They both step gracefully into the next moment of their lives by virtue of the battle they’ve been through.”
Monster-in-Law deals with universal themes and addresses the traditional evolution of family, the struggle that comes in accepting that process. “It’s a matter of allowing the family to grow as opposed to seeing this as a split in the nuclear family and a member of the family going away,” says Lopez. “It’s difficult for many parents who are protective of their children. Or when their parent-child relationship is very close. I can tell that I am going to have to wrestle with these same demons in the future when it comes to my own kids.”
Jane Fonda summed up her experience succinctly. “This film has been so much fun,” she says. “It’s a wonderful part; I love the director; I have enjoyed working with Jennifer; the whole crew is fabulous; the cinematographer is a genius; my best friend is part of the producing team; and it was shot in Los Angeles where my family lives. How does it get better than that?”
Fonda also had a bit of advice for audiences.
“Don’t think too much, just grab a big bag of popcorn and have a good time,” she says. “And bring your in-laws…or maybe not.”
