ScottNilsson (Atlanta, GA) | 05/08/2006 | Five Stars: MI3 is the one you’ve been waiting for!
Mission Impossible III displays an impressive breadth of nuanced direction, subtle acting and an engaging romantic interest with the requisite spectacular effects and stunts. This film rivets you to your seat, opening with flash-back of agonizing tension that lays the plot foundation: will Ethan Hunt/Tom Cruise prevent sadistic Owen Davian/Philip Seymour Hoffman from possessing the dreaded “Rabbit’s Foot” (euphemism for WMD) – going so far as to allow the murder an innocent hostage? Stupendous action sequences alternate with intrigue and suspense as the plot cascades to Europe, Asia – even the Vatican– under the relentless threat of absolute deadlines with horrifying consequences. Tom Cruise gives a revealing performance (his emotional involvement with Michelle Monaghan is poignant and credible) while performing action stunts worthy of an Oscar. Philip Seymour Hoffman’s chilling performance as the diabolical Owen Davian is a mastery of sociopathic understatement: he creates one of the most believable and terrifying villains in film history, and his character stays with you long after you’ve left the theatre. The third star of MI3 is director/co-writer J.J. Abrams: this is the best Mission Impossible thus far, with characters of greater depth, relatively few plot holes and a film that delivers more than a visceral thrill-ride. Mission Impossible III is tightly scripted, superbly acted, deftly directed – and thoroughly deserves a trip to the big screen.
