With so many other options available at this time of the year, my advice is to give this movie a pass in theaters and rent it when it's available on video. At least then, if you or the kids get bored through the long stretches in which nothing happens, the fast-forward button is close at hand. --James Berardinelli (ReelViews)
Less like Shrek, meaning hilarious and heartfelt, and more like Shark Tale, meaning manic and exhausting, Madagascar will keep kids distracted without transporting them to wonderland. --Peter Travers (Rolling Stone)
Madagascar is a pleasant, comfortable movie because so much of it is familiar. The pursuit of Marty through New York City feels like the latter half of Toy Story 2, and the script’s constant reliance on pop culture references, while clever, harkens back to the days of Reebok pumps and Aladdin. --Pete Croatto (FilmCritic.com)
Not quite as witty as either “Shrek” movie, “Madagascar” compensates by being far more visually interesting. And it does have the best animated penguins ever to appear in a feature film. B--Rebecca Murray (About.com)
My humble advice to the DreamWorks Animation Bureau would simply be this: skip the A-list voice-actors the next time out. The kids are going to line up around the block either way, and without all that excess salary and ego, you're inevitably bound to make a better movie. --Scott Weinberg (eFilmCritic.com)
Very young children will likely enjoy the bright colors, slapstick comedy and talking animals that look like plush toys. But accompanying parents will be looking at their watches during a very slight story that seems like a three-minute TV cartoon stretched way beyond endurance, even at 86 minutes (including credits). --Lou Lumenick (New York Post)
"Madagascar" is a delight. Co-writers and -directors McGrath and Eric Darnell, along with their entire team, have done a terrific job with their sweet and whimsical story.--Paul Clinton (CNN Showbiz)
Overall, "Madagascar" is just enjoyable and inoffensive enough to be a pleasant experience that can just as easily be forgotten.--Hanh Nguyen
It will never live up to its predecessor, Shrek, but it will give people a good time and, especially during this year, that is a novel aspect worth highlighting and recommending. B--Craig Younkin (Lee's Movie Info)

On purely entertainment levels the film more than justifies its existence, and contently achieves little else.--Luke Buckmaster
But on the other hand, doing so would certainly make it clear why "Madagascar," while amusing enough for a cheap Saturday matinee, doesn't have the originality, the style, the heart, the ageless humor -- and especially not the unforgettable characters --required to stand the test of time. --Rob Blackwelder
"Madagascar" - and, to a lesser extent, last year's "Shark Tale" - show split personalities, aiming over the heads of kids one moment and under the heads of parents the next.--Jack Mathews (New York Daily News)
Don't think me deranged for wishing Madagascar were darker. See this movie, and you'll understand that the cutesy angle just doesn't work. Perhaps a sinister tone isn't what Madagascar needs, but it does need some kind of edge, whether it be Shrek's subtle perversion or Toy Story's whimsical imagination. As a straight-forward, run-of-the-mill animated feature, Madagascar is an insult to its kin, and, sadly, probably not the last of its kind. --Jack Moore (The Movie Insider)
There are plenty of jokes and references for us old folks as well. I see a sequel sometime in the near future and hopefully this time around we will get to see more penguin. 8/10--Brendan Cullin (EmpireMovies.com)
