Plot: Director Ridley Scott confronts hundreds of years of religious conflict in KINGDOM OF HEAVEN. An epic film set in Europe and the Middle East, the story follows one man's struggle to better himself and the world around him. Orlando Bloom stars as Balian, a French blacksmith who is mourning the deaths of his wife and baby when his estranged nobleman father (Liam Neeson) arrives and asks him to join the Crusades in Jerusalem. Mindful that conducting the Lord's work will help him atone for his sins, Balian agrees, and embarks on the perilous journey. Along the way, he reveals his gifts of inherent goodness and fair treatment of all human beings. Upon reaching Jerusalem, a city where his meager beginnings no longer matter, Balian earns respect and fealty, while the evil Guy de Lusignan (Marton Csokas) looks down his aristocratic nose at the former laborer. As he did in GLADIATOR, Scott explores the theme of a man who chooses his fate, instead of accepting the fate given to him at birth. Balian comes to life in Jerusalem, protecting the weak and defenseless as his father told him he must, and catching the eye of the beautiful Princess Sibylla (Eva Green), unhappily married to de Lusignan. Scott paints a stirring portrait of the struggle over Jerusalem among Christians, Jews, and

Kingdom of Heaven is meant to bring the epic back to Gladiator-size glory. Scott delivers rousing entertainment layered with provocation. But he's up against the same core contradiction as the U.S. in Iraq: How do you justify the spectacle of bloody carnage while preaching the gospel of give peace a chance? --Peter Travers (Rolling Stone)
"Kingdom of Heaven" is the most exciting action-adventure yarn so far this year. Just don't expect anything deeper. --David Sterritt
Kingdom of Heaven isn't a masterpiece, but it is a solid war film that has fantastic battle sequences, beautiful sets and costumes, and stunning cinematography befitting an epic film of this magnitude. --Vince Leo (Qwipster.net)
Measuring Kingdom of Heaven against Gladiator is like comparing a Toyota Avalon to a Maserati, but if you put aside your tastes for the ultimate in cinematic luxury, you’re in for an entertaining — if unmemorable — ride. --J.P. Mangalindan (MovieWeb)
Kingdom of Heaven wants to be so much more than it is and fails because of it. So take my critique not as a warning to avoid the film but rather as a warning not to get too excited about it. Disappointment will surely follow if you do. 50/100--Joe Utichi (FilmFocus.co.uk)
“Kingdom of Heaven” is slick, well-made epic goodness. It’s not the best epic to try to rip off “Braveheart” and “Gladiator,” but as movies along this line go, you could do much worse. --David Cornelius (eFilmCritic.com)
The warriors can't be heroes because it wouldn't be proper to make a movie in which people who wantonly kill Muslims are heroes. You could have them do it grudgingly and against their will, I suppose, but people who are pushed around by their leaders don't make good heroes, either. C+--Eric D. Snider (EricDSnider.com)
Combining the violence of Gladiator with the topicality of Black Hawk Down, Scott's crusade to reconcile Christian and Muslim and bring peace to the Middle East blunts the impact of his moviemaking skills.--John P. McCarthy

Slow-moving, occasionally dull epic that remains watchable due to some decent performances and an action-heavy climax. Better than King Arthur and Alexander but not as much fun as Troy. --Matthew Turner (ViewLondon)
Thus, while there is a significant critique of religion imbedded in the film, it is not of any one religion. It is a justifiable critique, indeed, yet it sure is convenient how it allows the film to avoid any real controversy except from those who would actively seek it out.--James Kendrick
Overall, Kingdom of Heaven is a good, but not great "historical" epic. --Brian Oliver
But if you like big action films with absolutely no surprises, don't mind stories with some HUGE plot holes and are interested in that period in time, this film is for you. 6/10--Judith Wolfe
