Plot: It all begins with Arthur Dent (Martin Freeman), a typical guy having a very bad day. Arthur’s house is about to be bulldozed, his best friend turns out to be an alien and, to top things off, it appears that Planet Earth will be demolished in mere seconds to make way for a hyperspace freeway. Arthur’s only chance for survival: hitch a quick ride on a passing spacecraft, with the help of his best friend Ford Prefect (Mos Def). Jetting off into the complete unknown, Arthur makes some major, mostly harmless, discoveries about the true nature of the universe. He finds that a towel is the most massively useful thing a person can carry. He uncovers the precise meaning of life. And he learns that the answers to everything anyone ever wanted to know—and plenty that no one in his right mind could possibly have expected—are all to be found in one fantastically entertaining electronic book: The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the

It's a shame Adams didn't live to see this carefully cast and gently handled adaptation -- it captures the quizzical, quasi-spiritual nature of his book and manages to nail a surprising number of his dry little jokes, even some that you think could work only on the page.--Stephanie Zacharek (Salon)
So much of "Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy" is fun on a goofy wholesome level that it is hard to contain your exuberance while watching. I watched it with a smile from start to finish and if you give yourself over to its comic weirdness, so might you.--Jonathan W. Hickman
Hitchhiker's Guide is theater of the absurd, a Buñuel film for the zeroes. Stop worrying about it, and enjoy the spectacle, from Def and Deschanel's show-stealing performances to the fun sets to the Guide itself, which, in keeping with history, narrates and offers clever asides throughout the film. --Christopher Null (FilmCritic.com)
Those who come in expecting a sci-fi comedy full of high-end action and daring escapes may walk out disappointed, but those of us who welcome a worthwhile combination of strong British wit and interstellar insanity should absolutely have a real hoopy time. --Scott Weinberg (eFilmCritic.com)
In the end, "Galaxy" is a failure, but its good intentions are evident throughout. I wish I'd seen it 20 years ago.--Jack Mathews (New York Daily News)
The great charm of The Hitchhiker’s Guide is its uniqueness. It shares qualities with The Goon Show and Monty Python but it has a wonderfully refreshing innocence all its own. In a world sorely in need of optimism, it’s come at the right time.--Peter Thompson
Enjoyable, smartly directed sci-fi comedy that will probably split the diehard fans down the middle but is certain to win some new ones along the way. --Matthew Turner (ViewLondon)
And I'm sorry for being a geek but I though the factory floor sequence with Slartibartfast was gorgeous to look at and just, well, something that I think Douglas Adams would have been impressed with.--Rob Paul
Stephen Fry’s mellifluous tones lend themselves deliciously to the narration of the eponymous guide but it’s Alan Rickman, as the voice of Marvin the depressed robot, who ironically brightens every scene he’s in. 8/10--Jay Richardson (FutureMovies.co.uk)
The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy was a bit of a disappointment in the eyes of this hombre. It's probably worth a few chuckles and I'm not sure if the fact that I never read the books had anything to do with it, but from what I saw in the movie theatre yesterday, I consider this movie average at best, and that's probably being a bit generous. 5/10--Brendan Cullin (EmpireMovies.com)
Adams' story, which once went from here to there to way over there without much use for a map of any kind, was just a flimsy excuse on which he hung his anarchic gags and ticklish jabs; Hitchhiker's Guide had a plot the same way Duck Soup had a plot.--Robert Wilonsky
In spite of its flaws, The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy works because it does what good satire does best: It makes us humble in the sight of our own flaws. --Mark Dujsik
If you haven’t read the book and are wondering whether you’ll get the jokes, don’t worry. You may not be laughing in advance of them, but you’ll be up to speed in no time. Hitchhiker’s Guide should satisfy Adams purists and novices alike.--Melissa Prusi
There are basic elements that should have been explained by the screenplay but may have not been -- the sound mix is, to our ears, to our ears, drek (but we're old. We may be deficient). When expository material is overwhelmed by the score, its usually asign of greater deficiencies in the film. Not in this case.--Chuck Schwartz (The Cranky Critic)

The only superfluous player might be the Hitchhiker's Guide itself. Although it doles out the novel's trademark jokey wisdom, it also shows up in the nick of time to pull the story out of plot holes, paving them over with an irreverent quip or two. For any other movie, we'd just call that lazy storytelling. --Michael Machosky
The movie is a devastating satire on bureaucratic idiocies, epitomized in the bad guys, the Vogons, who are described as “bureaucrats of the universe, armed with awful poetry.” They are hateful and ugly. 6/10--Tony Medley (TonyMedley.com)
I think in an attempt to make more of the story than was there, the film ends up being less instead. I do love the dolphins, though.--Robert Glatzer
...whether you're a fan of the books or not, I think you'll enjoy The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. I had a great time, and I can tell how much I enjoyed a movie when, the day after, I'd pay to go see it again immediately. This could go down as one of my favorite films ever. It's not perfect, but it's one hell of a fun ride.--Sujit 'Chief' Chawla
For those in the know, be ready to be entertained and amused beyond your wildest expectations. For everyone else, you probably should just stay home and listen to some more Vogon poetry. Other than that, all I really have to say is, so long, and thanks for all the fish. +--Sara M. Fetters
Freeman is no Hanks, though, and "The Hitchhiker's Guide" won't boost anyone's career into hyperspace. Or give your mind a workout. --David Sterritt
