Sam Rockwell in Matchstick Men (2003)

Known for his dynamic leading performances in the independent film world, SAM ROCKWELL (Frank) has made a successful transition to starring roles in mainstream films.

Earlier this year, Rockwell starred in George Clooney's "Confessions of a Dangerous Mind", opposite Clooney, Drew Barrymore and Julia Roberts, for which he was awarded the Best Actor Award at the Berlin Film Festival and Movieline's Breakthrough Performance of the Year Award. Rockwell portrayed the game show magnate Chuck Barris, in this adaptation of Barris' memoirs written by Charlie Kaufmann ("Being John Malkovich").

Rockwell was also recently seen co-starring opposite Clooney, Patricia Clarkson, Jennifer Esposito, William H. Macy and Gabrielle Union in the Russo brothers' comedy "Welcome to Collinwood" for Warner Bros. Pictures.

In recent years, he starred in David Mamet's Heist, opposite Gene Hackman, Rebecca Pidgeon and Danny DeVito; the blockbuster "Charlie's Angels"; and Frank Darabont's Oscar-nominated "The Green Mile", based on Stephen King's serialized novel, receiving critical praise for his portrayal of Wild Bill, an uncontrollable prisoner who makes trouble for everyone else on his cell block. He was also seen in DreamWorks' box office hit "Galaxy Quest", with Tim Allen, Sigourney Weaver, Alan Rickman and Tony Shalhoub.

Rockwell gained considerable notice in three independent films: John Duigan's "Lawn Dogs", in which he starred as a lonely outsider who forms a controversial alliance with a rebellious ten-year-old girl. His performance earned him Best Actor Awards at both the Montreal and Barcelona Film Festivals. He also starred opposite Steve Zahn, Harvey Fierstein, and Michael Lerner in John Hamburg's "Safe Men", and in Saul Rubinek's dark comedy "Jerry and Tom", as a used-car salesman who moonlights as a part-time hit man.

Rockwell's additional big screen credits include Woody Allen's "Celebrity"; Michael Hoffman's "A Midsummer Night's Dream", with Kevin Kline and Michelle Pfeiffer; Tom DiCillo's "Box of Moonlight", opposite John Turturro; Peter Cohen's "Drunks", with Richard Lewis, Parker Posey and Faye Dunaway; Paul Schrader's "Light Sleeper", with Willem Dafoe; Uli Edel's "Last Exit to Brooklyn", with Jennifer Jason Leigh; and his feature film debut in Francis Ford Coppola's "Clown House", while he was still a student at the High School of the Performing Arts.

On stage, Rockwell has appeared in "Face Divided", as part of the EST Marathon series, as well as the Off-Broadway production of "Goosepimples", written by noted film writer/director Mike Leigh.
