Plot: Brazil's underground crime circle makes an intriguing setting for this tense action film from director Jose Henrique Fonseca. Viewers are swept up in the drama of criminal activity as the film's protagonist, Maiquel, transforms from a nobody to a local hero and then to a sought-after criminal in the short span of 24 hours. Patricia Melo's acclaimed novel O MATADOR formed the basis for the film--which begins innocently enough with a bet and a man dying his hair blonde. Creatively photographed with hints of American film noir style, MAN OF THE YEAR marks another solid contribution to Brazilian filmmaking.
