Plot: Detective David Starsky (BEN STILLER) is the most dedicated undercover cop working the mean streets of Bay City, California. Maniacally devoted to his job, when he’s on duty no crime goes unpunished – and he’s always on duty. And that’s a good thing, because he has some metaphorically big shoes to fill: his mother was a legend on the force, one of the best cops in the history of Bay City. But while his mom stuck with the same partner throughout her entire career, due to his extremely zealous brand of police work, Starsky burns through partners faster than his beloved Gran Torino goes through spark plugs.Detective Ken “Hutch” Hutchinson (OWEN WILSON) is having career issues of his own – he’s a good cop, but his hazardously laidback personality and desire for a quick buck don’t always get the job done. He has excellent instincts, he just needs a little bit of focus to keep him on the admittedly less profitable side of the law. Exasperated Bay City Police Captain Dobey (FRED WILLIAMSON) has found the perfect solution for two of his biggest problems: pair up Starsky and Hutch and put them out on the streets. As soon as the two mismatched crime fighters unhappily begin their first day on the beat as a team, a “floater” turns up on the Bay City coastline. With the help of Hutch’s

Even as a series, though, "Starsky & Hutch" had its fits and starts. By the fourth and final season, the once tough crime drama had devolved into self-parody, some of which is directly referenced in the film. So if the movie sometimes seems too silly forits own good, detractors can point their fingers first at the series. -- (Boxoffice Magazine)
What modest pleasure the film affords is largely thanks to the charisma of its genial stars. When all is said and done, though, how hard is it to make fun of a decade that gave us both the Ford Gran Torino and the Pacer, oversize aviator shades and that masterpiece of top-40 make-out schmaltz, "Don't Give Up on Us, Baby"?-- (Washington Post)
The film's director is Todd Phillips of "Road Trip" and "Old School." I was not a big fan of either movie, but they both contained real laughs, and now in "Starsky & Hutch," he reaches critical mass. Will the movie inspire me to watch reruns of the original series? No. I want to quit while I'm ahead. -- (Chicago Sun-Times)
The puffy hairstyles, bad nylon shirts and leather-thong necklaces are there, but the big laughs, alas, are not.-- (Salon)
Going into the film, I was of the opinion that, of all the '70s TV shows I might like to see on the big screen, Starsky and Hutch wasn't on the list. A laugh-filled hour and a half later, I was happy that the film had proven me wrong. -- (ReelViews)
"Starsky & Hutch," the movie, has no weight or purpose. But it takes its triviality seriously enough to make it feel fresh. That's as good an excuse for its existence as any. -- (L.A. Daily News)
Maybe if you go in with low expectations, you'll enjoy it more than I did, but as it stands now, I would definitely recommend that you catch this movie on video one night, if only to check out some of its fun actors and Vaughn's hilarious turn as the "bad guy", but otherwise, I don't think it's worth investing your hard-earned dollars to see in theaters. Undercooked. 5/10-- (JoBlo.com)
Even though it's got no Soul, the cool '70s cop show has been given a generally satisfying big screen comic overhaul.--Michael Rechtshaffen (Hollywod Reporter)
Starsky & Hutch will remind you just how bad '70s cop shows could be, but its stellar comic cast will keep you laughing in spite of it. --Kit Bowen (Hollywood.com)
I have to say that I was sort of disappointed, but was amused enough to recommend it as an entertaining night out. B--Craig Younkin (Lee's Movie Info)
Will likely please and hand over what is craved B--Lee Tistaert (Lee's Movie Info)
It’s less inspired on a conceptual level than Zoolander, the other major Stiller-Wilson collaboration, but it isn’t saddled with Jerry Stiller making prostate jokes, either. --Jesse Hassenger (FilmCritic.com)
Starsky and Hutch is a breezy ride that no doubt will appeal to the same audience that loved Old School, but really, this is the kind of movie that's best enjoyed with lowered expectations. --David Nusair (Reel Film Reviews)
