Shrek 2 Reviews |
With its appealing blend of animated comedy, romance, and adventure, Shrek 2 follows the formula of its predecessor while maintaining enough originality not to come across as a direct copy. Fans of the first movie will be pleased. Although Shrek 2 isn't as breezy as Shrek, it's a respectable effort and a solid example of family-friendly entertainment. The enjoyable animated romp lives up to expectations, which is more than can be said for any of its current big-budget multiplex competition. [read review] --James Berardinelli (ReelViews)
There are some suggestive jokes within the film but most will probably fly right over the heads of young children, so it isn’t anything to worry about on the part of the parents. Though it isn’t perfect, 'Shrek 2' is sure to remain one of the most pleasant family films of the year and for that reason alone it should be one of the must-see films of the season. There aren't too many films that can follow up the grand success of their original with a sequel that's just as worthy, in terms of the qualities that made its successor a hit, and an ability not to simply re-create the first one all over again, but in the case of SHREK 2, they have done just that with a continued emphasis on story, humor, entertainment, emotional connection and fun, fun characters. [read review] 8/10 --'JoBlo' (JoBlo.com)
Most young children will surely enjoy Shrek 2, and their parents will be able to tolerate it, at least. I can’t say the experience was very pleasant for me, though. Most of the time, I couldn’t stand watching characters, who once were used in a rather exciting and insightful manner, go to waste in such a ridiculous sequel. Children will worship this film and pester Mommy and Daddy to buy every merchandise tie-in imaginable. Most parents will be satisfied with the film and will enjoy the experience with their family, but Shrek 2 probably won't make too lasting of an impression, until said pestering begins. [read review] 7/10 --Aaron West (Movie-Vault.com)
'Shrek 2" is bright, lively and entertaining, but it's no "Shrek." Maybe it's too much to expect lightning to strike twice. "Shrek" was so original in its animation and such an outpouring of creative imagination that it blindsided us; "Shrek 2" is wonderful in its own way, but more earthbound. [read review] --Roger Ebert (Chicago Sun-Times)
Sure, the animation work is great, but it's the actors and their subtle, complex vocal performances that make us care about these fairy-tale characters. "Shrek 2" is all about fantasy, but its characters are rousingly, affectingly real -- not to mention real, real funny. [read review] --Michael O'Sullivan (Washington Post)
Shrek 2 is a must-see film for people of all-ages, and unless you're a total scrooge, it has a magical energy that is infectious enough to make you want it to never end. Luckily, DreamWorks should rake in big bucks for this blockbuster sequel, so at thevery least, we'll be sure to see our favorite ogre in at least one more adventure. [read review] --Vince Leo (Qwipster.net)
...it’s clear the sequel intends to match the wit and style of its predecessor. Fortunately it succeeds, finding new targets for its fairy-tale bashing humor. The result is the kind of summer escapism you don’t need to lower your expectations to enjoy. [read review] --David Thomas (FilmCritic.com)
That's extremely enjoyable for its pure wit and energy, and somehow as clever as it is, it's not enough. One wishes the same wit and energy had gone into the story. That's "Shrek 2" in a nutshell -- very pretty to look at, very hard to care for. [read review] --Stephen Hunter (Washington Post)
Sadly, though this computer-animated adventure has its moments -- and at least one terrific new character (see related story) -- it's a victim of classic sequelitis: Original idea, three years later, doesn't feel nearly as original. [read review] --Glenn Lovell (San Jose Mercury News)
They really don't add any new conflict...they just put a face on it, in Prince Charming. And while it's not quite as magical as the first movie, there is still plenty to keep you in your seat, in this very entertaining flick. [read review] --Brian Gallagher (MovieWeb)
"Shrek 2" takes a much needed breather from the annoying and lazy tendencies of the Shrekified humor, slowing down the pace and keeping the deeply unfunny references and spoofs to a minimum. [read review] B- --Brian Orndorf (FilmJerk.com)
Shrek 2 isn't just an animated film, but a romantic comedy with a lesson about life and love. It can touch and entertain any age, and by the end it can have you clamoring for more. [read review] B+ --Craig Younkin (Lee's Movie Info)
Retains the best of the original – funny characters, smart dialogue, sharp wit and a sweet moral – with less of the obnoxious aspects, and an hilarious new character. [read review] 84/100 --Brian Webster (Apollo Guide)
This movie is more of a formulaic adult romantic comedy than a Cinderella kids’ movie, and it plays its strings just right to please its many fans. [read review] B --Lee Tistaert (Lee's Movie Info)
Yes, it's for the kids, but this animated sequel may be one of the most mature movies about adult relationships ever made. [read review] --Stephanie Zacharek (Salon)
Getting to spend more time with these guys is a treat, but ultimately "Shrek 2" is a mostly unnecessary sequel. [read review] --Kevin N. Laforest (Montreal Film Journal)
"Shrek 2" is a Hollywood rarity: a sequel every bit as good -- if not better -- than the original. [read review] --Paul Clinton (CNN Showbiz)
Where's the magic you ask? Oh, baby. That's way gone. [read review] --Blake Snyder (MovieWeb)
