Shopgirl Reviews

external linkShopgirl is so satisfying, despite what little it gives up to an audience not willing to work for it. An unconventional, honest romance paired with gorgeous visuals, Shopgirl will garner criticism from folks who thought Lost in Translation was way better, but I'd rather judge it all on its own and what I see is a film that just aches with its themes and makes me wonder what woman, if based on a real person, Martin wrote it about...and possibly, for. external linkIt wasn’t until “Shopgirl” was over that I was struck by just how bad the movie really was. It seems cute and sweet, but it’s clear that nepotism got this movie made, not talent. If the film was written by anyone other than Steve Martin, it would have never seen a studio greenlight until it had undergone a slew of massive rewrites. [read review] 2/5
--Todd LaPlace (eFilmCritic.com)
external linkWhat are the chances that "Shopgirl" will usher in a new, intelligent brand of romantic-comedy, the same way "There's Something about Mary" ushered it out? Slim, I'm afraid. But happily, if there are any old-fashioned romantics left out there – as Mr. Martin clearly bets there are – this is the film for them. [read review] 3.5/4
external linkThe movie is strangely detached when it needs the viewer to latch on the most. It's a nice try at sad romance; it just seems to have concentrated more on the fanciness of its dinnerware than on serving a satisfying meal on them. It taps on ideas of how shallow relationships are easy refuge for the lonely, but ends up being too neat and simplistic to get those ideas sold. [read review] 6/10
external linkFamiliar on the surface yet boasting some mellow and serene surprises throughout, "Shopgirl" is a classy, quiet, and entirely enjoyable look at one particular strain of modern romance -- and it might just inspire you to think a little bit differently thenext time you see a 60-year-old guy holding hands with a 30-year-old cutie. [read review] 4/5
--Scott Weinberg (eFilmCritic.com)
external linkIt's an interesting movie, if a bit messy, but it has an interest to explore the complicated residue of poisonous relationships, and features a good quality cast and crew to richly realize the emotions. [read review] 4/5
--Brian Orndorf (eFilmCritic.com)
external linkIt is not as strong a movie as Lost in Translation, nor does it leave as indelible a psychological imprint, but it will find favor with many who liked Sofia Coppola's venture into similar territory. [read review] 3/4
--James Berardinelli (ReelViews)
external linkShopgirl is a pass because it doesn't execute well enough. The heady concepts and frequent laughs don't make up for the yawns you'll have to endure over the second 50 minutes. [read review] D+
external linkAs an anthropological study of the state of the male-female relationship in contemporary society, SHOPGIRL provides interesting fodder. As entertainment, it falls short. [read review] 2/5
--Andrea Chase (Killer Movie Reviews)
external linkUnusual, occasionally uneven romance that just about succeeds thanks to a captivating central performance by Claire Danes. [read review] 2/5
--Matthew Turner (ViewLondon)
external linkA tender and perceptive film. [read review] 3.5/4
--Roger Ebert (Chicago Sun-Times)
