Reese Witherspoon in Legally Blonde 2: Red, White & Blonde (2003)
REESE WITHERSPOON (Elle Woods, Executive Producer) has distinguished herself with an increasingly diverse body of work that has made her one of Hollywood’s most sought after young actresses. Witherspoon also has a production company, TYPE A Films, housed at Universal, where she has a number of feature film projects in development.
Witherspoon received critical acclaim for MGM’s Legally Blonde, which earned her a Golden Globe nomination for Best Actress; the film also earned a Best Picture nod. Legally Blonde was one of 2001’s most successful films. Last summer, Witherspoon co-starred in Oscar Wilde’s The Importance of Being Earnest, directed by Oliver Parker, with Rupert Everett, Colin Firth, Judi Dench and Frances O’Connor.
Late last year, Witherspoon starred in Sweet Home Alabama, her first film to pass the domestic $100 million mark. Directed by Andy Tennant, the film starred Witherspoon as a New York City fashion designer.
Witherspoon displayed her gift for comedy in Pleasantville, written and directed by Gary Ross. Earlier in 1998, she starred in Robert Benton’s dramatic thriller Twilight with Paul Newman, Gene Hackman and Susan Sarandon.
Witherspoon followed Pleasantville with the lead opposite Ryan Phillippe and Sarah Michelle Gellar in Cruel Intentions, released in 1999. Roger Kumble wrote and directed this contemporary farce, based on Les Liaisons Dangereuses.
Witherspoon furthered her career with the lead in Election, a satirically-edged comedy from Alexander Payne released in April 1999. Witherspoon received the Best Actress award from the National Society of Film Critics as well as a Golden Globe nomination.
A native of Nashville, Tennessee, Witherspoon attracted the attention of audiences and critics alike with her feature film debut in Robert Mulligan’s coming-of-age drama The Man in the Moon. She went on to play the lead in the dramatic adventure A Far Off Place, then starred opposite Patricia Arquette in Diana Keaton’s critically acclaimed Lifetime feature Wildflower.
In 1995, Witherspoon starred opposite Mark Wahlberg in the James Foley thriller Fear. Later, she received rave reviews for her performance in the independent feature Freeway, produced by Oliver Stone and directed by Matthew Bright. The film debuted at the Sundance Film Festival and aired to record-breaking numbers on HBO. Other feature credits include Best Laid Plans and American Psycho.
