Plot: The Passion of the Christ is a film about the last twelve hours of Jesus of Nazareth's life. The film opens in the Garden of Olives (Gethsemane) where Jesus has gone to pray after the Last Supper. Jesus resists Satan's temptations. Betrayed by Judas Iscariot, Jesus is arrested and taken back to within the city walls of Jerusalem where the leaders of the Pharisees confront him with accusations of blasphemy.

Jesus is brought before Pilate, the Roman Governor of Palestine, who listens to the accusations leveled at him by the Pharisees. Realizing he is confronting a politicial conflict, Pilate defers to King Herod in the matter. Herod returns Jesus to Pilate who gives the crowd a choice between Jesus and the criminal Barrabas. The crowd chooses to have Barabbas set free and to condemn Jesus.

Jesus is presented with the cross and is ordered to carry it through the streets of Jerusalem all the way up to Golgotha. On Golgotha, Jesus is nailed to the cross and undergoes his last temptation - the fear that

external linkAnd even after the hour-plus of graphic brutality and stereotyping that so punishingly lead up to it, the Crucifixion scene itself is as powerfully and beautifully staged as any on film. 3/4

external linkWith all the media fervor behind making this so controversial the whole world had to see it, who wouldn't? Would it be anti-Semitic? ... It turns out that, no, I barely stayed awake through it, but I did find it anti-Semitic. I do not, however, wish tosimply say, “It’s anti-Semitic!” and then walk away after dropping that label so lightly. 4/10

external linkThis film was one of the riskiest projects in the history of Hollywood but he created it for a reason and you gotta give the man that much. Nobody is saying that this is exactly how it all went down back in the day (nobody can say that with complete conviction anyway), but this is one man's vision of that time and as a movie...it's pretty damn good! 8/10

external linkThis graphic depiction of the crucifixion of Christ misses any spiritual meaning to this seismic event.
--Kirk Honeycutt (Hollywod Reporter)

external linkIt would be impossible not to react to The Passion of the Christ; the impact of those reactions is harder to predict. One can only hope those who see the film are closer to enlightenment, if not to truth, than either Gibson, or his critics, give them credit for. 2.5/4
--Leigh Johnson (Hollywood.com)

external linkThe movie is so wrapped up in its violence that it loses Jesus' message of love and inspires only resentment for the people handing out this intolerable punishment; this is a very one-sided interpretation of Jesus' life. C-
--Craig Younkin (Lee's Movie Info)

external linkDespite the controversy and lack of commercial appeal of the film, Gibson put his heart into the production and created one of the best films of the decade. A
--Gareth Von Kallenbach (Lee's Movie Info)

external linkMy problem with The Passion is that it relies too heavily on the religiously knowledgeable viewers who have a rich history of the subject matter. C+
--Lee Tistaert (Lee's Movie Info)

external linkPutting an artistic expression of this shape and explicitness is brave of Mel Gibson, and “The Passion of the Christ” is a profoundly felt and memorable film. C
--Brian Orndorf (FilmJerk.com)

external link...an astonishing cinematic achievement, utterly riveting from start to finish. Intense and dramatic, the film's only real drawback is the hardcore violence - which will undoubtedly turn off a large number of viewers.
--David Nusair (Reel Film Reviews)

external linkSometimes hard to follow for those less familiar with the details, it’s a realistic and unsettling reflection into Christianity and the nature of man for good or evil that must be hailed as a cinematic masterpiece for its boldness. 4.5/5
--Derek May (MovieWeb)

external linkChrist. What a movie. 5/5
--B. Alan Orange (MovieWeb)

external linkThe visceral shock of this violence should have an effect on anybody with a Christian belief however as a film in its own right The Passion Of Christ is not on the better end of the scale. 2.5/5
--Carl Lazarevic (MovieWeb)

external linkPowerful, brutal and as subtle as a smack in the face, The Passion Of The Christ may be the most relentless horror film since The Texas Chainsaw Massacre. It is certainly more violent. 3/5
--Nev Pierce (BBC Films)

external linkAlternate title: The Gospel according to Takashi Miike. Seriously, Mel Gibson is the closest Hollywood equivalent to the Japanese director of “Audition” and “Ichi the Killer”. 4/4
--Kevin N. Laforest (Montreal Film Journal)

external linkFor moviegoers who don’t share Mel Gibson’s religious agenda, it’s nothing but an unpleasant experience. 58/100
--Brian Webster (Apollo Guide)

external linkControversial Biblical drama, directed by Mel Gibson and focusing on the last 12 hours in the life of Jesus Christ. 3/5
--Matthew Turner (ViewLondon)

external linkDespite graphically portraying lots of nails, this film never really pins Jesus down. Beautiful, violent - and also funny for all the wrong reasons, and boring. 5/10
--Anton Bitel (Movie Gazette)

external linkDespite all the hype and controversy, 'Passion' turns out overall to be something surprising - rather average. Visually its glorious, the straight fowardness of the tone & lack of backstory make for an essentially empty adaptation... 2.5/5
--Garth Franklin (DarkHorizons)

external link...the film is frightening -- not for its dogma, but for the relentlessness of its brutality.
--Christy Lemire (San Francisco Examiner)
