When Grandma hits the road on her quad runner, Napoleon and Kip’s meddling Uncle Rico (Gries) comes to town to stay with them and ruin their lives. Napoleon is left to his own devices to impress the chicks at school and help his new best friend Pedro (Ramirez) win the election for Student Body President against the stuck-up Summer Wheatley (Duff); all the while making sure to feed Grandma’s pet llama Tina, and avoiding association with Uncle Rico and the herbal breast enhancers he sells door to door. With a low-key sense of humor and without the slightest whiff of sentimentality, Hess delivers a film about geeks that makes Revenge of the Nerds look like the Hollywood tripe that it is. --James Berardinelli (ReelViews)
Napoleon Dynamite is hardly a perfect movie, but it's one of the more memorable offerings of the year, exactly the type of film that keeps indie filmmakers on the map. 7/10--Aaron West (Movie-Vault.com)
Napoleon Dynamite isn’t much of a film, when you break it down outside the theater, when the cheers have died away and you’re left with the nagging question: But what was it about? --Chris Barsanti (FilmCritic.com)
Napoleon Dynamite is wacky and full of social wisdom, a one-of-a-kind experience for anyone, regardless of their preference in film. --Danny Baldwin (BucketReviews.com)
It was a bold move to make NAPOLEON DYNAMITE, a wry and sober comedy about family neglect and social ostracism that is deeply, truly funny. This is a film that dares to delve into the realms of the truly unlikable and to then go on to make the audience care about them. --Andrea Chase (Killer Movie Reviews)
'NAPOLEON Dynamite," a charming and often hilari ous comedy about the ultimate high school nerd, is refreshing for its simplicity and its originality in a marketplace dominated by soulless blockbusters. --Lou Lumenick (New York Post)
When you’re not laughing out loud at the array of goofball characters, there are performances to marvel over, and a story to emotionally connect with. B+--Lee Tistaert (Lee's Movie Info)
There’s absolutely nothing of value to be found in “Napoleon Dynamite,” the latest in repulsive geek-chic cinema that is so devoid of laughs and interesting characters that it boggles the mind how something this paper-thin and obnoxious got made. F--Brian Orndorf (FilmJerk.com)
Napoleon Dynamite has all the makings of a cult classic just waiting to happen. --Dainon Moody (CultureDose.net)
"Napoleon Dynamite" is a gloriously quirky, hysterically funny ode to rural dullness that is probably the fairest, most accurate film representation that Preston, Idaho, will ever get. A---Eric D. Snider (EricDSnider.com)
You must see it to believe it because this film is entirely original. The movie’s final line will have you in stitches. It’s the most romantic line ever said on film! 75/100--Jamie Gillies (Apollo Guide)
Unfortunately, the film doesn't have too many inspired scenarios, spends a lot of time focusing on these hyper-real situations that don't sincerely reflect actual life and ultimately didn't make me laugh as much as it wanted to. 5/10--'JoBlo' (JoBlo.com)
Napoleon seems to passively invite ridicule, and his attempts to succeed have a studied indifference, as if he is mocking his own efforts. --Roger Ebert (Chicago Sun-Times)
"Napoleon Dynamite" can't really claim to be much more than a funny film. But it can make you laugh, and it can give you a character you'll remember for quite a while. And that is, indeed, pretty sweet. B+--Dean Carrano (FilmJerk.com)
