Tagline: Never Pick Up A Stranger.
Plot: When a young man, driving to California by himself, naively picks up a hitchhiker, he gets more than he bargained for: the hitcher is a serial killer who mercilessly slashes anyone he meets, ranging from truckstop waitresses to happy families in station wagons. Because of a lucky fluke, the driver manages to escape the charismatic murderer. Enraged that one of his intended victims has gone free, the hitcher cleverly frames the young man for the killings. Now the driver realizes he is the only one who can stop the hitchhiker -- and his freedom depends on his success.

With some stark mood and Hauer turning in a steely and evil performance this passable flick could've worked if the script by Eric Red wasn't so implausible and lacking explanation. -- (TheVideoGraveYard.com)
One of the best road-related movies and the definitive hitch-hiker flick. Interesting story and characters with a lot of suspense and action. Keeps you wondering what's going to happen next. Highly recommended. 8/10--FrighT MasteR (UHM)
Definitely one for the books. It delivers all the goods and then some. A thriller with brains, an action flick with soul, a horror film with purpose. The Hitcher is one of those rare films that works on all it’s level, not spelling it out for the audience and still managing to entertain. This film is in a league of it’s own…pick up The Hitcher and see what I’m talking about… --'The Arrow' (Arrow)
