Plot: Captain Malcolm Reynolds, a hardened veteran (on the losing side) of a galactic civil war, now ekes out a living pulling off small crimes and transport-for-hire aboard his ship, Serenity. He leads a small, eclectic crew who are the closest thing he has left to family, squabbling, insubordinate and undying loyal. When Mal takes on two new passengers, a young doctor and his unstable, telepathic sister, he gets much more than he bargained for. The pair are fugitives from the coalition dominating the universe, who will stop at nothing to reclaim the girl. The crew that was once used to skimming the outskirts of the galaxy unnoticed find themselves caught between the unstoppable military force of the Universal Alliance and the horrific, cannibalistic fury of the Reavers, savages who roam the very edge of space. Hunted by vastly different enemies, they begin to discover that the greatest danger to them may be on board Serenity

It's often said that you have to make one of these types of films before you know how to make one of these types of films, and if so that bodes great things for a sequel.-- (ComingSoon.net)
In the end you are left with the feeling that Whedon works better on television than in the cinema, the bigger canvas afforded his undoubted directorial chops being insufficient to balance out the effects upon his writing - rather a big fish in a small (screen) pond.
Lastly Serenity has been given new music for this outing. People who appreciate the original Firefly theme tune should stick the credits out for a little treat.--David Perilli
Many, I’m guessing, might want to pick up some cough mixture on their way home from the theatre too – with all the screaming, laughing, yahooing and shouting, they’ll be doing, they’re inexorably going to lose their voice.-- (MovieHole.net)
There are also unanticipated scenes of real impact, including a planet where -- but see for yourself. I'm not sure the movie would have much appeal for non-sci-fi fans, but it has the rough edges and brawny energy of a good yarn, and it was made by and for people who can't get enough of this stuff. You know who you are. --Roger Ebert (Chicago Sun-Times)
Odd as it may seem, a vernacular that includes phrases such as "I aim to misbehave" and "None of us know'd that" allows the filmmaker to kick the space western up a notch by connecting the two genres so explicitly. Whedon knows that he's blazing down a well-worn trail, but he addresses that by deftly adding elements of humor, action, romance and horror and continually confounding audience expectations.--Kevin Crust
“Serenity” is a right step towards reestablishing a balance to the entertainment universe, and the start in what optimistically will be the start of something bigger and better.--Edward Havens (FilmJerk.com)
Whether or not ‘Serenity’ will lead to the revival of the ‘Firefly’ TV series, the movie is sharp and memorable entertainment on its own. You don’t need to see a single episode of ‘Firefly’ to appreciate this wild space ride.--Harrison Cheung (Movie-Gurus.com)
It's good stuff, and I hope it connects with an audience enough for us to get another movie in a couple year's time. --Jay Seaver (eFilmCritic.com)
Joss Whedon's ``Serenity'' is ``Buck Rogers'' on Red Bull, a hipper, funnier, action-packed throwback to the original ``Star Wars.'' --James Verniere (BostonHerald.com)
"Serenity" exists because legions of fans made the "Firefly" DVD set an unexpected best seller. Both deserve to be seen, though you may want to consider approaching this saga from its rightful start. It takes the intrepid brashness of a Whedon hero to venture into unknown adventures without proper preparation.--Elizabeth Weitzman (New York Daily News)
And yet I found it inexplicably amusing. Because of the film's generally insouciant tone, I was able to pretty much forgive it for all of its shortcomings. And for that reason, and because this is the closest thing that a Star Trek fan can see, "Serenity" reaches its desired velocity.
Where the film tips into something remarkable is in its spiritual subtext. The story is about faith--in a cause, in a higher power, in each other. Each character is forced not only to make extremely difficult decisions, but also to examine their personalbeliefs.--Rich Cline

Fans of the TV series will be interested to know that the movie is actually the original concept for the pilot episode but do not think that you have to be familiar with the series to keep up. It takes no time to get the plot background and you will findyourself in the mix quickly.
In the context of an action cinema driven by false hope, misogyny and sadism, Serenity is an inspiring respite: A major battle is won by someone simply admitting to the truth.--Steve Schneider
Browncoats, though, will be stunned that Whedon can be so bloodthirsty. Still, they will feel satisfied Whedon made these sacrifices so that Serenity would prove doggedly true to the Firefly mythology. -- (Hollywood.com)
Universal Studios took a chance with this one—it isn’t a cheap-looking TV movie blown up to theatrical size, but a real motion picture—and I hope it pays off for the execs who green-lighted it. “Serenity” is, at the risk of repeating myself, dumb fun, and as long as a film knows it’s dumb fun and doesn’t try to make us believe that it’s the second coming of Joseph Campbell, we can enjoy it at that level. --Doug Bentin (eFilmCritic.com)
I'm being too rough of this movie. Charisma does flow from several of Serenity's many pores, but much of it is clogged through sludgy diatribes and small characters that give nothing to the plot other a reason to cry. For the silver screen, this is a great effort from Joss Whedon, but maybe he should just stick to TV for the time being. --Sex and Lucia (The Movie Insider)
SERENITY, springing from Joss Whedon’s super-talented mind, combines cast, effects, cinematography, and score into an amazing experience for fans and newcomers alike. See this movie and remember what good science fiction can be like, in fact see it twiceand then invite friends to become true “brown coat” fans of the phenomenon that is SERENITY.
