Stuart Gordon's adaptation of H.P. Lovecraft's Herbert West: Re-Animator puts a Night of the Living Dead spin on the classic Frankenstein story. Jeffrey Combs furrows his brow and bugs his eyes as the preternaturally intense Herbert West, a maverick medical student whose gory, gooey experiments cause bloody corpses and body parts to jerk to life. Bruce Abbot is the studious roommate drawn into his extracurricular experiments, which soon involve the dean's daughter (the frequently naked Barbara Crampton) and the college's cadaverous, calculating star professor (David Gale), who literally loses his head over a battle for West's discovery. In this world, that's only a minor setback. Charged with sick gallows humor and a ghoulish gallery of undead beasties, Re-Animator, like Evil Dead II, is one of the most inspired and inventive--and funniest--horror films of the 1980s. Combs, Abbot, and Gale reunite for the almost-as-entertaining sequel Bride of Re-Animator. --Sean Axmaker

Herbert West has a very good head on his shoulders… and another one in a dish on his desk. This is Re-Animator as we have been waiting to see it. The technical quality of the picture and sound has never been better, making this the definitive state of the art version of this blood drenched horror classic. We have kept the original commentary tracks, but added gobs of other material, including on-camera interviews with the writer, director, producer, composer, Jack F. Murphy, for investing so much time and money, and for taking such care with all the little details that go into creating a first rate product. Re-Animator is a very special movie to me and many others involved in its production, and it is gratifying to have it presented in such an excellent way. For horror fans this edition preserves what we love about Re-Animator in all its sturm and drang and gory glory, and for cinema buffs it is just a great genre movie in a great DVD package. If it has been a while since you have seen Re-Animator, this is a good time to re-view it, and if you have never seen it before, this is your opportunity to see what the excitement is all about. So, take this one home and enjoy! -Brian Yuzna

Herbert West (Jeffery Combs) has found the secret to eternal life--or so he thinks. West needs fresh cadavers to continue his experiments in the re-animation of dead tissue, so he enlists the help of young medical student Dan Cain (Bruce Abbott) to steal bodies from the local morgue. Despite all the warning signs of failure, the eccentric West's research continues. The results are crazed zombies that roam the streets, severed heads that talk, murder, madness, and chaos, all in the name of science, of course. Director Stuart Gordon's film debut, an adaptation of the short story by H.P. Lovecraft, is a masterpiece of ghoulish fun. Graphic special effects, good scripting, and perfectly over-the-top performances make RE-ANIMATOR a classic horror film in the tradition of THE EVIL DEAD and RETURN OF THE LIVING DEAD.

Herbert West is obsessed with the idea of bringing the dead back to life. Experimenting with a glowing green fluid, he successfully reanimates dead tissue. Unfortunately, the dead are uncontrollable and difficult to subdue. Dr. Carl Hill, West's instructor, is determined to steal his secret and take all the credit for the discovery. Herbert isn't willing to give it up so easily. No matter what the consequences are! Stylishly directed by Stuart Gordon (From Beyond), this film adaptation of the short story "Herbert West: The Reanimator" is a non-stop gore fest filled with wit and humor.
