Tagline: Get enchanted
Plot: It all begins when Ella of Frell (Anne Hathaway) is given a fairy’s “gift” at birth – the gift of perfect obedience. Forced to do anything she is commanded – no matter how silly or dangerous – Ella’s life hardly seems to be in her own control. Things only get worse when Ella’s father (Patrick Bergin) remarries, bringing into her life a stepmother, the dastardly Dame Olga (Joanna Lumley), and two sinister stepsisters, Hattie (Lucy Punch) and Olive (Jennifer Higham), who get a kick out of watching Ella obey their every request at the “Frell Galleria.” Now, Ella is newly determined to gain her independence and break free of the spell that binds her once and for all. She sets off on a quest of discovery that will take her through the Kingdom’s most dangerous and darkest forests – where she finds a fellow traveler in a go-getting Elf (Aidan McArdle) -- to the King’s spectacular castle. Along the way she crosses paths with the idolized Prince Char (Hugh Dancy), who so often graces the cover of Medieval Teen, only to turn the tables on fairy tale history and rescue him with true love. But most of all, Ella will discover her own power to fight for what’s in her

The movie is an embarrassment - another example of Hollywood excess overwhelming and sinking an otherwise unassuming story. This is one instance when I can most heartily advise ignoring the multiplex and video store on the way to the library. --James Berardinelli (ReelViews)
Notwithstanding its unoriginality and the less-than-charismatic Cinderella-lite lead, Enchanted will still find some love with the young girls it targets. --David Levine (FilmCritic.com)
The best you can say about "Ella Enchanted" is that, thanks to Hathaway, it's a somewhat more magical experience than last week's royal romance, "The Prince & Me." --Lou Lumenick (New York Post)
Despite being adapted from the popular children’s book by Gail Carson Levine, this all-singing, all-dancing fairy tale is all-but-unbearable thanks to a restrained script that reins in the comedy just when it should be escaping the paddock with ogres, elves, and The Princess Bride’s Cary Elwes in tow. --Marc Savlov (Austin Chronicle)
''Ella Enchanted,'' a funny takeoff on the ancient conventions of fairy tales, might be thought of as a live-action version of ''Shrek,'' the computer-animated hit of 2001 that blended a Brothers Grimm setting with characters and values drawn from contemporary shopping-mall culture. But as directed with verve by Tommy O'Haver ''Ella Enchanted'' is already so heavy with computer-generated effects that calling it live-action is to stretch the point.--Dave Kehr (The New York Times)
...it's a high-spirited charmer, a fantasy that sparkles with delights. --Roger Ebert (Chicago Sun-Times)
I knew what the film was trying to be and it was OK, sometimes even good, sweet and charming, but never great, which I believe Ella had the potential to be. C+--Jennifer Alpeche (Lee's Movie Info)

Ella Enchanted is a congenial fairy tale that reminds of a book's illustrations come to vibrant life. The film's inventive, sly sense of humor only aids in giving its familiar premise a flourishing identity to call its own. --Dustin Putman (The Movie Insider)
Like "Ever After," another you-go-grrrl Cinderella story, "Ella Enchanted" is a fairy tale with a moral of female empowerment and self-sufficiency. In the end, it may leave its audience, young and old alike, just as charmed as its bewitched young heroine.--Michael O'Sullivan (Washington Post)
“Ella Enchanted” is a film adults can enjoy with their younger family members or alone, and might not too be embarrassed to recommend to their friends. B+--Edward Havens (FilmJerk.com)
If you really enjoyed "Shrek," there might be a glimmer of entertainment awaiting you in "Ella Enchanted." A lousy, dreary knock-off, based on a popular children's book, "Ella" is only saved by star Anne Hathaway's charms. But even that can only deflect the stupidity and creative bankruptcy the film is soaked in for short periods of time. D---Brian Orndorf (FilmJerk.com)
