Plot: Based on the perennial best seller, BECAUSE OF WINN-DIXIE tells the story of a lonely young girl who adopts an orphaned dog she names Winn-Dixie (for the supermarket where she found him). The bond between the girl and her special companion brings together the people in a small Florida town and heals her own troubled relationship with her father.Twentieth Century Fox and Walden Media present BECAUSE OF WINN-DIXIE a Wayne Wang Film adapted from the popular and much-honored novel of the same name by Kate DiCamillo. "Because of Winn-Dixie" doesn't have a mean bone in its body, but it's dead in the water. --Roger Ebert (Chicago Sun-Times)
It’s true that “Winn-Dixie” is simplistic in its storytelling, but that’s all part of its charm. --David Cornelius (eFilmCritic.com)
“Because of Winn-Dixie” is too aggressively bland and well-meaning for its own good; while there is never any danger that the dog will be put to sleep by the end, I cannot say the same for anyone in the audience over the age of 12. --Peter Sobczynski (eFilmCritic.com)
Mostly, ``Because of Winn-Dixie'' is anything but quiet. It is filled with slapstick, pratfalls and a dog with the cutest smile this side of Julia Roberts, even if he is digitally enhanced. --Stephen Schaefer
"Winn-Dixie" doesn't overdo it on sentimental mush, nor does it pound in its messages with a sledgehammer. It remains, at heart, a simple story about coming together to cope with personal and economic upheaval. --Michael Machosky

Unfortunately, this wonderful movie is probably doomed to suffer the same fate as last year’s “The Notebook,” which was released so early in the year it was forgotten when awards time came around. Even though this is a children’s movie I loved it. 9/10--Tony Medley
