Ice Cube triumphantly returns as Calvin Palmer, proud proprietor of a neighborhood barbershop in Barbershop 2. The first Barbershop was a surprise smash; even more surprising is how good this sequel is. The plot isn't much--there's a corporate haircutting chain opening across the street, leading to the usual sentiments about the importance of small businesses and neighborhoods--but the well-conceived characters and the loose, genuine banter give this movie a striking richness of feeling. Barbershop 2 cuts back and forth in time, flashing back to when Eddie (garrulous Cedric the Entertainer), the shop's oldest and most outspoken barber, first came to work for Calvin's father. Glimpses of black history give weight to the modern-day struggles; most impressively, this device doesn't feel forced or cynical. Also returning are Eve, Troy Garity, and Sean Patrick Thomas; Queen Latifah (Bringing Down the House) is a new face on the block. --Bret Fetzer
DVD features The DVD extras for Barbershop 2 are much like the movie itself--not especially inspired or surprising, but raffish and likable. None of the handful of deleted scenes seem unjustly left out, but a couple (particularly the ones featuring Cedric the Entertainer) prove entertaining. Of the two audio commentaries, the one by the director and producers falls flat, full of a lot of self-congratulation; the less self-conscious talk from the actors proves more amusing (with Cedric again providing most of the wit). A couple of music videos (one with Mary J. Blige and Eve, another with Sleepy Brown and Outkast) are enjoyable, but the usual outtakes (actors laughing at their flubs) and still photos are bland and perfunctory. --Bret Fetzer

Take a seat, sit back, and get ready for another haircut: Calvin opens up shop once again in Barbershop 2: Back in Business, a sequel to the original comedy smash hit. Ice Cube, Cedric the Entertainer, Sean Patrick Thomas, Eve, Troy Garity, Michael Ealy, and Leonard Earl Howze - they're still cutting hair and cutting up in Calvin's shop on the South Side of Chicago, with Oscar®-nominee Queen Latifah joining the fun as Gina, a stylist at the beauty shop next door, and Kenan Thompson stepping in as a rookie trying to earn his clippers.
In Barbershop 2: Back in Business, Calvin (Ice Cube) has gotten over his money troubles and is no longer in danger of losing his shop - but his neighborhood is in danger of losing its identity. Intent on "regentrifying" the South Side, a money-hungry corporation is moving into the community with coffee bars, video stores, and a big-name haircut chain, and the area's "mom and pop" establishments are in danger of losing their hometown advantage. While juggling changing situations, new loves, and looking for ways to better their lives, Calvin and his crew have to take a stand to keep the South Side and its businesses in the family.
And of course, the crew still has time for its signature Barbershop discussions - outrageous, explosive, and hilarious. The world changes and so do hairdos, but some things never go out of style - you can still say anything at the barbershop.
