Plot: A replusive, decaying figure with razor-sharp appendages (and an even sharper sense of humor!) suddenly appears in the dreams of four Los Angeles teenagers. It is the ghost of Freddy Krueger, a suspected child murderer killed long ago by the neighborhood parents. Now he's able to exact his bloody vengeance by killing the teens off, one by one, as they sleep. Finally just one girl remains. Desperately, she tries to stay awake by every means possible, but even pills and massive amounts of coffee wear off sometime -- and when they do, she'll have to battle Freddy for her very life. It's her worst nightmare ... and it's coming

Many of the parts in A Nightmare on Elm Street seem weighed-down by the low-quality acting of its inexperienced actors and the sheer cheeziness of the film's music; but this is a definite case of the good well outweighing the bad, as the nightmare sequences and the overall tone of the movie prevail over its lesser qualities.--Cortney Fusco (Diabolical-Dominion.com)
At a time where slasher movies glutted the horror market this was a breath of fresh air with an imaginative script, young lead actress who carries it fine and a villian who would quickly ascend to pop culture anti-hero status. -- (TheVideoGraveYard.com)

The special FX were modern for it's decade with some animatronics (which is always good) and that tone music, well, that tone is just another creepy edition to Nightmare on Elm Street's outstanding qualities. 8--Steve Lewis (horror-movies.ca)
