Martin Cruz Smith came up with the idea for GORKY PARK in 1972 after reading about a book called THE FACE FINDER by Mikhail Gerasimov, about scientists' efforts to reconstruct faces from unidentifiable remains. Gerasimov reconstructed the face of Tamerlane, as depicted in Michael Apted's film.
