From the guys who brought you SUPER TROOPERS...Broken Lizard is back, surrounded by limber, wanton women on a booze-soaked island resort owned by Coconut Pete (Bill Paxton), a rock star has-been. But the non-stop party takes a turn for the weird when dead bodies start turning up faster than you could drink a rum punch. Everyone begins to look suspicious. Could it be Sam (Erik Stolhanske) of the Fun Police brigade, who is quick on the trigger with his tequila loaded super-soaker; Jenny (Brittany Daniel), the over-sexed, fitness instructor; Juan (Steve Lemme), the flamboyant diving instructor with a secret third-world past; Putman (Jay Chandrasekhar), the bratty-British tennis coach/fanatic; Dave (Paul Soter), the ecstasy-crazed, adopted nephew of Coconut Pete; or the burly masseuse (Kevin Heffernan) blessed with a creepy ‘touch’ that can render anyone into instant Jell-O? Can the inhabitants of Pleasure Island unite, solve the mystery and restore happy hour to this tropical bacchanal?
BROKEN LIZARD’S CLUB DREAD was written by Broken Lizard and directed by the group’s Jay Chandrasekhar, who also directed SUPER TROOPERS, which premiered at the 2001 Sundance Film Festival. Their first film PUDDLE CRUISER, also directed by Chandrasekhar, was screened at several film festivals including Sundance, IFFM, SXSW, the London and Berlin International Film Festivals, and was named winner of the Hamptons International Film Festival’s Grand Prize for Best Film. Broken Lizard has collectively written and performed together for the past 10 years, creating stage, film and television material.
BROKEN LIZARD’S CLUB DREAD also features Brittany Daniel ("Sweet Valley High," JOE DIRT), M.C. Gainey (HAPPY TEXAS, THE NEW GUY), Jordan Ladd (NEVER BEEN KISSED), Tanja Reichert ("Relic Hunter"), Samm Levine ("Freaks and Geeks") and Lindsey Price ("Beverly Hills 90210").
Looking for plenty of sex, violence, and lowbrow comedy? If you are, you could do a lot worse (or is it a lot better?) than to visit Club Dread, a boldly wretched excuse for broad comedy perpetrated by the Broken Lizard troupe--the same guys who brought their potty-mouthed brand of lunacy to bear on 2002's Super Troopers. That alone should serve as ample warning or invitation, depending on your tolerance for way-too-casual sketch comedy, stitched together with an emphasis on big, gross laughs and enough female frontal nudity to give Girls Gone Wild a run for its money. It all takes place on Coconut Pete's Pleasure Island, where Pete (Bill Paxton, slumming it with infectious abandon) holds court while scantily clad vacationers play crazy games (life-size Pac-Man, anyone?) and provide easy prey for a slasher on the loose. Ah, but there's the rub: Is this schizoid movie a comedy or a horror flick? It's both... and neither... and the bloodletting is surprisingly extreme amidst all the poop and fart jokes. Of course, that won't stop Club Dread from finding its audience. We know you're out there…and you know who you are. --Jeff Shannon
