There's almost no gore in in this movie—just the unnerving suggestion of it in the film's effective prologue. Unfortunately, there's not much suspense in here either, even during the climactic showdown between Jill and the title character. And while West(Lara Croft: Tomb Raider) can't resist the lure of cheap scares—apparently de rigeur for slasher flicks—he at least doesn't tack on multiple, increasingly ridiculous endings to the narrative... 

...everything eventually hinges on the well-worn premise's unaltered (and long-in-coming) surprise, a twist liable to stun only those few audience members unfamiliar with the movie's ubiquitous commercials and trailer, the original film, or the notoriousurban legend on which the story is based.

...But the bare-bones story simply can't survive being stretched to a feature-length running time, and Camilla Belle is not nearly as charismatic an actress as she would need to be to carry this movie by herself. She's in almost every frame, yet she never registers as a real person whose safety we should fear for. There might be terror out there, but it's not coming from inside the movie. C
