DAVID DUCHOVNY (Bob Rueland) has emerged to become one of the most highly acclaimed actors in Hollywood. Currently the star of Fox Television's monster hit The X-Files, Duchovny has been nominated for an Emmy Award for Outstanding Actor in a Drama Series, and was also nominated for Outstanding Guest Actor in a Comedy Series for his controversial appearance on The Larry Sanders Show. In 1997, Duchovny won a Golden Globe Award for Best Actor in a Drama Series. He has been nominated for a total of three Golden Globes, three Screen Actors Guild and TV Critics' Award for Best Actor in a Drama Series.
Since The X-Files debuted six seasons ago, millions of self- proclaimed "X-Philes" have spent their Sunday nights watching their hero, the brilliant and sullen FBI Agent Fox Mulder, explore cases deemed unbelievable or unsolvable for the Bureau. Duchovny's guest appearance on the series finale of The Larry Sanders Show allowed him to display his comedic skills, and won him an American Comedy Award. He further demonstrated his comedic talent as a host of last season's finale of Saturday Night Live.
Duchovny expanded his creative horizons by directing and writing a critically acclaimed episode of The X-Files entitled "The Unnatural." He most recently wrote and directed his second episode of The X-Files entitled "Hollywood A.D." in which he playfully parodies the filmmaking process by having the agents watch themselves depicted by actors performing in an FBI film based on their department.
Duchovny's film credits include last summer's hit The X-Files feature film, Playing God, an action thriller with Timothy Hutton and Angelina Jolie. His passion for renegade films brought him critical acclaim for his performances in the feature films Kal{fornia, in which he co-starred with Brad Pitt and Juliette Lewis; The Rapture, directed by Michael Toikin, in which Duchovny starred opposite Mimi Rogers; and Julia Has Two Lovers, in which he turned in a finely reviewed performance as a telephone hustler. Duchovny played Roland "Rollie" Totheroh, Charlie Chaplin's longtime confidante and cameraman in Sir Richard Attenborough' s Chaplin, which starred Robert Downey, Jr. in the title role; and starred as an evil yuppie in the smash hit Beethoven. It was on this film that Duchovny first met Bonnie Hunt, who portrayed Charles Grodin's wife in the family comedy.
Still recognized for his role as Dennis/Denise Bryson, the transvestite detective in David Lynch's breakthrough television series Twin Peaks, Duchovny has also spent four seasons as the impassioned narrator of Zalman King's erotic anthology series Red Shoe Diaries, which began as a feature length telefilm for Showtime.
On stage, Duchovny has appeared in such plays as "The Copulating Machine of Venice, California" and "Green Cockatoo."
Born and raised in New York City, Duchovny attended Princeton University (where he played one season as shooting guard on the school's basketball team), received his masters degree in English Literature from Yale, and was on the road to earning his Ph.D. when he began to commute twice a week to New York to pursue acting.
Duchovny now lives in Los Angeles with his wife, actress Tea Leoni, with whom he has a baby daughter.
