Genre: Comedy
Tagline: Where's Olive?
Plot: No one among the Hoovers quite has it together, but it’s not for lack of trying. Father Richard (GREG KINNEAR), a hopelessly optimistic motivational speaker, is desperately attempting to sell his 9-step program for success -- without much success. Meanwhile, the Hoovers’ “pro-honesty” mother Sheryl (TONI COLLETTE) is constantly harried by her family’s eccentric secrets, especially those of her brother (STEVE CARELL), a suicidal Proust scholar fresh out of the hospital after being jilted by his gay lover. Then there are the younger Hoovers with their unlikely dreams – the four-eyed, slightly plump, seven year-old would-be beauty queen Olive (ABIGAIL BRESLIN) and Dwayne (PAUL DANO), an anger-fueled, Nietzsche-reading teen who has taken a staunch vow of silence until he gets into the Air Force Academy. Topping off the family is the grandfather (ALAN ARKIN), a foul-mouthed pleasure-seeker recently kicked out of his retirement home for snorting heroin. They might not be the picture of perfect mental health, but when a fluke gets Olive invited to compete in the fiercely competitive “Little Miss Sunshine” competition in California, the whole Hoover family rallies behind her. They pile into their rusted-out VW bus and head West on a three-day tragicomic journey filled with madcap

If properly marketed, Little Miss Sunshine could prove to be a sleeper hit. It's the kind of picture audiences enjoy because there's substance to go with the humor, and movie-goers will leave the theater feeling uplifted. Ultimately, despite flirting with some darker subjects, Little Miss Sunshine lives up to its name. --James Berardinelli (ReelViews)
Dayton, Faris and their talented cast bring just the right amount of fresh quirkiness to the overused family road comedy movie to give "Little Miss Sunshine" the type of universal feel that only a filmmaker like Alexander Payne has been able to pull off in the past. Getting solid laughs from everyday situations, the movie mainly works because you fall in love with each and every member of this family and find yourself rooting for them every step of the way. 9/10--Edward Douglas (ComingSoon.net)
...will please crowds who like a bit of titillation and provocation with their quirky family fare. It's an expertly made comedy with a cast firing on all cylinders and a fireworks display of an ending...."Little Miss Sunshine” could have been a conventional road movie with a chuckle here and there. The exceptional cast, solid directing and a briskly paced story help to raise it to the level of one of the best comedies of the summer. B,B+--Robin and Laura Clifford

...is enjoyable because it’s moving without being pedantic, it’s funny while being honest about how family members treat each other, and it takes everything about being human with a smart affection sorely lacking in current filmmaking. --Rachel Gordon (FilmCritic.com)
This beautiful comedy -- easily the best of the year -- knows the hysterical heartbreak of that truth. It knows that we've all been locked in that car at one time or another, that at the end of the day it's really for the best... and that it's all going to hurt like hell anyway. A---Rob Vaux (Flipsidemovies.com)
...The ending, when they actually arrive at the pageant, might be a bit over the top and the characters might be too distinctly drawn, but none of this matters when it comes to the entertainment value of this movie, because over the course of the story you will find that you both care and can laugh at them, often at the same time...Do yourself a favor, if you have the opportunity to see this movie, take it. --Scott Nash (TheMovieBuffs.com)
