Visually movies don't get much better. This is the best looking low-budget movie I've ever seen and it's years better than most horror movies that were coming out at the time. To this day it is still original and interesting. There's just nothing else like it. It breaks all the conventions, they all have, and that's why I love them so much.--David Rivera (Diabolical-Dominion.com)
Seen today this cult classic is somewhat dated and silly but the first appearance of the silver sphere is unforgettable and there's enough nifty ideas on hand to forgive the sometimes amateurish acting and so-so effects. ... A total low-budget drive-in flick that's okay viewing if held back a bit by its B-movie execution. A favourite of horror fans is worth seeing at least once and sports an effective musical score. -- (TheVideoGraveYard.com)
For me, at least, Phantasm seems to try too hard to be a film that will appeal to teenagers, and it suceeds, to a minor degree. ... the narrative itself is too diffused--it's all over the place, eventually ending with a twist that I found jolting and upsetting, but perhaps not unfitting. --Jack Witzig (ColdSpot)
