Plot: On a daredevil caving holiday, six women friends are unexpectedly trapped underground when a rock fall blocks their exit. Searching the maze of tunnels for a way out, they find themselves hunted by a race of fearless, hungry predators, once humanoid but now monstrously adapted to live in the dark…

As the others battle for their lives, Sarah (Macdonald), still recovering from a mental collapse brought on by the recent deaths of her family, is fighting for her sanity. When old secrets are revealed, the friends turn on one another, causing the group to implode. Betrayed and desperate, Sarah realizes that to make it back to the surface, she must become as savage as the creatures

external linkDescribed by writer-director Neil Marshall as ‘Deliverance goes underground’, this film clearly represents a step forward for his career, highlighting in particular the difference that a decent budget can make for a talented filmmaker. 3.5/5

external linkIf there's ever a horror movie that you had to absolutely see, let this be it! This is one of the best horror flicks I've seen in a long time. Hot chicks + scares + blood and guts + a large group of strange sharp-toothed-cave-dwelling-predators = brilliance. 8/10
--FrighT MasteR (UHM)

external link...was a brilliantly structured and executed piece of horror cinema. It was well written, layered, expertly acted, suspenseful as hell, directed with flair, emotionally resonant and f*cking gory/violent as well! I have absolutely nothing bad to say aboutthis diamond in the rough…all I will say is see it, see it and SEE IT! THE DESCENT is the movie I’ve been waiting for all year…THANK YOU! 4/4
--'The Arrow' (Arrow)

external linkthis is one of the horror films around which actually manages to frighten and disturb 4/5

external linkPossibly the best horror movie in history even if many might argue with me on this. I was scared to hell and there wasn't one second of the movie that I felt bored,... 5/5
--AnthroFred (SlasherPool)

external linkA film that spends a long time building up the suspense, before unleashing some of cinemas most terrifying imagery! 5/5

external linkFar too gory for any but the very strongest of stomachs, this is nonetheless intelligent and well constructed horror fare. It lacks the humour that made Dog Soldiers such a delight, and in years to come my Friday night beer n' pizza horror DVD of choice will still be Marshall's previous effort, but this is, by most forms of reckoning, a better, more substantial film. 4/5
--Scott Andrews (FilmFocus.co.uk)

external linkNeil Marshall’s follow-up to Dog Soldiers is a smartly written, atmospheric horror film with an attractive cast and a gleefully inventive streak of gore running through it. 4/5
--Matthew Turner (ViewLondon)

external linkI wouldn’t normally resort to this kind of cliché (well, maybe I would) but if you are going to see one film this year, go and see The Descent. 9/10
