James Garner in Divine Secrets of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood (2002)

Academy Award nominee and Emmy-winning actor JAMES GARNER (Shep) continues to transition easily between film and television. Most recently, he was seen in Clint Eastwood’s Space Cowboys. Prior to that, he starred with Paul Newman in Twilight and in the film version of Maverick, though he ceded the role of Bret to Mel Gibson. He currently stars on the CBS series First Monday.

Garner has appeared in over 40 films, including The Children’s Hour, The Great Escape, The Americanization of Emily, Grand Prix, Cash McCall, Move Over Darling, Support Your Local Sheriff, The Skin Game, Victor/Victoria and Murphy’s Romance, for which he received an Oscar nomination.

He first came to stardom on the small screen as the reluctant hero Bret Maverick in the hit series Maverick. In 1974, he returned to television and gained his biggest fame as private eye Jim Rockford in the long-running television series The Rockford Files. The series was immensely popular, and in 1977 Garner earned an Emmy Award for his performance. Later he reprised the role in seven Rockford Files television movies for CBS. His more recent television films include One Special Night, Legalese, The Last Debate and Roughing It.

Other memorable television work includes the film Promise, for which he was nominated for an Emmy for Best Actor and awarded an Emmy as Executive Producer, Outstanding Television Drama. He starred in Heartsounds, My Name is Bill W., Breathing Lessons, earned Golden Globe Awards for Best Actor for his roles in Decoration Day and Barbarians at the Gate, and made several guest appearances on Chicago Hope in its final season.

Born in Norman, Oklahoma, Garner bounced around at several jobs starting at age 14, including a stint in the Merchant Marines. He was drafted into the Korean conflict, where he was awarded a Purple Heart. After the war, he returned to the States where he began his acting career with a small role in The Caine Mutiny Court Martial on Broadway.
