JOHNNY DEPP's compelling performance in the title role of Tim Burton's Edward Scissorhands established him as one of Hollywood's most sought-after talents and earned him a BestActor Golden Globe nomination. He was honored with a second Golden Globe nomination for his portrayal in Benny & Joon, an offbeat love story in which he starred with Aidan Quinn and Mary Stuart Masterson. Depp was reunited with Tim Burton for the heralded Ed Wood, the story of one of America's most eccentric B-movie directors. Depp's performance earned him a third Best Actor Golden Globe nomination.
Depp starred in Mike Newell's critical and commercial hit Donnie Brasco alongside Al Pacino and in Don Juan Demarco as a man convinced he is the world's greatest lover opposite legendary actors Marion Brando and Faye Dunaway. His other films include The Astronaut's Wife; Terry Gilliam's Fear And Loathing in Las Vegas, based on the Hunter S. Thompson novel of the same title; Jim Jarmusch's Dead Man, a western set in the late 1800s; Lasse Hallstrom's What's Eating Gilbert Grape, starring Depp in the title role; Emir Kusturica's Arizona Dream, co-starring Jerry Lewis and Faye Dunaway; John Badham's Nick of Time; Ro man Polanski's The Ninth Gate and Tim Burton's Sleepy Hollow.
In 1997, Depp made his directorial debut with The Brave, based on a novel by Gregory McDonald. Depp also starred in the film alongside Marion Brando, and co-wrote the screen play with his brother D.P. Depp. It premiered at the 1997 Cannes Film Festival.
The Kentucky-born actor grew up in Florida where he developed an early interest in music. After joining a rock band named Kids, Depp found considerable regional success and eventu ally followed the group to Los Angeles. When the band broke up shortly thereafter, he turned to acting on the advice of a friend and soon landed his first major acting job in Nightmare on Elm Street. He went on to earn roles in several other films, including Slow Burn and the Academy Award-winning Platoon. Depp then won the role that would prove to be his break through, as an undercover detective on the popular Fox television show "21 Jump Street". He starred on the series for four seasons before segueing to the big screen in the lead role of John Waters' Cry Baby.
As a musician, Depp has played guitar on two albums with the band Oasis as well as with Shane McGowan, formerly of the Pogues. He is also a member of the band "P", whose other members include Butthole Surfer Gibby Haynes, guitarist Bill Carter, Sex Pistol Steve Jones, Red Hot Chili Pepper Flea and Sal Jenco.
