Plot: More surreal south-of-the-border fare from anarchist auteur Alex Cox. This deceptively linear film tells the story of Pedro Rojas, a simple man working in an incredibly corrupt system (the film's fictional Mexican Highway Patrol). As the film progresses, the unreality of Pedro’s "beat" in the desert combines with various woman troubles to pull his life tighter and tighter into a spiral of desperation and crime.HIGHWAY PATROLMAN is not well known in the United States, probably because it is entirely filmed in Spanish (with subtitles). But it’s a little gem--a much simpler film in some ways than Alex Cox’s acclaimed REPO MAN, but a very powerful, focused portrait of a small man in a big, corrupt world.
