Sissy Spacek in In the Bedroom (2001)

SISSY SPACEK has created a diverse repertoire of characters throughout her career and has received five Academy Award nominations for Best Actress. She first came to the attention of audiences and critics alike in Terence Malick's acclaimed "Badlands," in which she played a 15-year-old on an interstate crime spree, starring with Martin Sheen.

In 1976, she was nominated for an Academy Award for her role in "Carrie." Following that film she starred in Robert Altman's "Three Women," for which she won the New York Drama Critics Award. In 1980, her portrayal of singer Loretta Lynn in "Coal Miner's Daughter" brought her critical acclaim as well as the Academy Award, Golden Globe, LA Film Critics Award and NY Film Critics Award.

Spacek was directed by her husband, Jack Fisk, in her next film, the poignant drama, "Raggedy Man" with Sam Shepard. She received her third Academy Award nomination for her role in director Costa-Gravas' "Missing," in which she starred with Jack Lemmon. She then starred with Mel Gibson in "The River," which earned her yet another Oscar nomination. Following her role as a woman who stands up to corrupt politics in "Marie," she starred with Kevin Kline in "Violets Are Blue," also directed by Fisk, and "Night Mother" with Anne Bancroft. She received her fifth Academy Award nomination as well as the NY Film Critics Award and Golden Globe for portrayal of Babe in "Crimes Of The Heart," with Diane Keaton and Jessica Lange.

In 1990 she starred with Whoopi Goldberg in the drama "The Long Walk Home," set during the Montgomery bus boycott of the early 60's. She then appeared opposite Kevin Costner in Oliver Stone's acclaimed and controversial "JFK". Her other film credits include Truman Capote's "The Grass Harp," "Affliction" opposite Nick Nolte, "Blast from the Past" opposite Brendan Fraser and Christopher Walken, and David Lynch's "The Straight Story." She will next be seen in "Tuck Everlasting" with William Hurt and Ben Kingsley.

Spacek's television credits include the Emmy nominated Hallmark Hall Of Fame "A Place for Annie"; co-staring with Tommy Lee Jones in his directorial debut "The Good Old Guys," for which she received an Emmy nomination; and the miniseries "Streets of Laredo" from the best-selling book by Larry McMurtry. She appeared in HBO's critically acclaimed "If These Walls Could Talk," with Demi Moore and Cher, and most recently in "Songs Of Ordinary Time" and "Midwives," both based on best-selling books.
