Plot: Kiyoshi Kurosawa has built a strong reputation in Japan as a horror auteur due to the popularity and acclaim that has been bestowed upon his films CURE and DOPPELGANGER. SÉANCE is a made-for-television film, based on the 1964 film SÉANCE ON A WET AFTERNOON, that displays Kurosawa's skill even with a limited budget. An unhappy couple are granted a temporary burst of purpose when a young girl, kidnapped in a high-profile case, escapes her tormenters and hides in their house. Instead of immediately informing the police, however, the couple decide to plant a series of clues to "prove" the wife's psychic abilities in locating the girl. But when their plot backfires horrifically, the couple ends up paying dearly for their deception. A good horror film with some decent creepy scenes. It does run a little slow and turns into somewhat of a drama later on, but it's worth a watch at least once. 7/10-- (UHM)
