CLIFF CURTIS (Smiley), renowned for his indelible array of chameloen-like and multi-cultural characterizations, has appeared in many acclaimed films in his native New Zealand. Among these projects are the Academy Award-winning film The Piano, with Holly Hunter and Harvey Keitel; Desperate Remedies, for which he received a New Zealand Film Award for Best Supporting Actor; Rapa Nui, produced by Kevin Costner; Kahu & Maia, directed by David Blythe, and the film Once Were Warriors, directed by Lee Tamahori, for which Curtis received a New Zealand Film Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor. Most recently. Curtis starred in the New Zealand production Jubilee, for which he won the New Zealand Film Award for Best Actor.
Among his other numerous film credits are Ted Demme's epic tale of the U.S. cocaine trade Blow, in which he starred with Johnny Depp; Deep Rising, directed by Stephen Sommers; Virus, with Jamie Lee Curtis and Donald Sutherland; Ivan Reitman's Six Days Seven Nights; Michael Mann's The Insider, with Al Pacino; Martin Scorsese's Bringing Out the Dead; and the acclaimed Warner Bros. Pictures feature Three Kings, with George Clooney and Mark Wahlberg. His forthcoming projects include Frank Darabont's The Majestic and Andrew Davis's Collateral Damage.
In addition to his film credits, Curtis has worked extensively in New Zealand television. He starred in the television Movie of the Week Undercover, and the miniseries The Chosen, for which he received the New Zealand Television Award for Best Actor, as well as Movie of the Week Overnight, for which he received a New Zealand Television Award nomination for Best Actor.
Curtis spent a year training at the New Zealand Drama School before attending the prestigious Teatro Dimitri Scoula in Switzerland. His stage credits include "Macbeth," "The Cherry Orchard," "The Merry Wives of Windsor" and "Porgy and Bess."
