Plot: In the early 22nd century, the crew of the medical rescue vessel Nightingale 229 has recently departed for a routine patrol of deep space. On this quiet, lonely ship, it's business as usual for Captain A.J. Marley (Robert Forster), co-pilot Nick Vanzant (James Spader), chief medical officer Kaela Evers (Angela Bassett), computer engineer Benj Sotomejor (Wilson Cruz), medical tech Yerzy Penalosa (Lou Diamond Phillips) and paramedic Danika Lund (Robin Tunney).

In these peaceful moments before they are called, the crew has no idea that an alien artifact has been mined out of a rogue moon millions of light years away but when the emergency distress signal finds them, they have no choice but to respond.

Dimension-jumping through space, the ship arrives in the center of a massive celestial storm and in direct gravitational pull from a blue giant star about to implode. Caught in the powerful cosmic whirlpool of the star, the Nightingale must also contend with Karl Larson (Peter Facinelli), the charismatic and mysterious young man they've rescued. Crew members start turning up dead, the survivors must unravel their refugee's secret and escape to their home galaxy before the giant star goes supernova.
